MONTREAL (January 6, 2014) - The No. 9 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's basketball team enjoyed a successful holiday break as they finished second at the Concordia-adidas Tournament hosted by the Concordia Stingers during the last week of December.

The Hawks, who own a 9-1 record in conference play, finished the tournament with a 2-1 record following victories over the Bishop's Gaiters and the Laval Rouge et Or. Laurier's only loss came to the host Stingers, who are ranked No. 8 in the country and won the tournament with a perfect 3-0 record.

Laurier opened the event against the Stingers, dropping a 59-47 decision. Playing their first game as a team in almost a month, the Hawks were slow out of the gate and could not recover in suffering their first loss since early November. Laura Doyle of Guelph, Ont., and Samantha Jacobs of Enniskillen, Ont., led the team with eight points each.

In their second game against Bishops, it was a much better result for the purple and gold as they jumped out to a 17-point lead after the first quarter and never looked back en route to a 76-51 win. Kaitlyn Schenck of Kitchener, Ont., led all scorers in the game with 15 points while Whitney Ellenor of Pickering, Ont., NICOLE MORRISON of Hamilton and Jacobs all eclipsed double figures.

The Hawks final game of the tournament came against the Rouge et Or and in a double overtime thriller, Laurier came away with a 79-77 win. Jacobs once again was solid for the Hawks finishing with 17 points and six rebounds while Ellenor had a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds to go along with five blocked shots. Following the tournament, Ellenor was named one of five tournament all-stars in his first action since injuring her ankle in the preseason.

Laurier will return to conference play this Wednesday when they host the No. 2 Windsor Lancers at the Athletic Complex. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
