TORONTO (November 17, 2013) - Rookie goalie Amanda Smith of Burlington, Ont., posted her second career shutout to lead the No. 5 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks to a 3-0 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues on Sunday afternoon.

Playing what head coach RICK OSBORNE called "their best 60 minute effort of the year", Laurier dominated Toronto from start to finish, outshooting the Varsity Blues 34-22. The Hawks also won the special teams battle, killing off all seven powerplay opportunities for the Varsity Blues while also converting on one of their five chances with the man advantage.

Forward Jessie Hurrell of Palgrave, Ont., continued to put up points for the Hawks, registering an empty-net goal and an assist in the contest. Defenceman Candice Styles of Orangville, Ont., tallied the game-winning goal on the powerplay late in the first period.

Rookie Jessica Prevette of Mississauga, Ont., rounded out the scoring with her fifth goal of the season.

Smith improved her record to 6-2-0 on the season as she stopped all 22 Toronto shots. Her counterpart Nicole Kesteris of Aurora, Ont., was credited with the loss after allowing two goals on 33 shots.

With the win, Laurier vaults over the No. 7 Guelph Gryphons for second place in the conference. The Hawks now have a league-best 10 wins against two losses. Toronto falls to 7-3-1 with the loss.

The purple and gold now return home for three straight games at the Waterloo Recreation Complex to close out the 2013 portion of their schedule. Up first for the Hawks is a matchup against their cross-town rivals, the Waterloo Warriors, on Thurday, November 21. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.
