Laurier: 66 Queen's: 62
WATERLOO, Ont. (November 15, 2013) - Coming off their first loss of the season to the Ryerson Rams, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's basketball team wasted no time getting back into the win column Friday night as they managed to slip past the Queen's Gaels in a 66-62 decision.
The Hawks jumped out to an early lead, pushing the score to 22-14 by the end of the first quarter. They were motivated by the presence of Doreen Bonsu
of Oakville, Ont., and COURTNEY BRUCE
of Orillia, Ont., both of whom were playing in their first game of the season after being out with injury.
After a second quarter slump in which the Gaels would come back and take the lead, the Hawks set to work battling to regain the advantage. Kaitlyn Schenck
of Kitchener, Ont., led the Hawks putting up 14 points, her most of the season so far. Lee Anna Osei
of Toronto, Bree Chaput
of Guelph, Ont., and Samantha Jacobs of Enniskillen, Ont., all joined Schenck putting up double digits.
Leading the Gaels was Kingston, Ont., native Liz Boag who managed 17 points and shot 100 percent from outside the arc.
The Hawks would cling to a two point lead for most of the last minute of play before a pair of free throws from Jacobs would put the game out of reach. The Hawks shot 44.1 percent on their field goal attempts only slightly edging out the Gaels who shot 43.1 percent.
With the win the Hawks remain undefeated at home, a stat they will look to maintain Saturday when they host the York Lions in the annual Pack It Pink game in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and the CIS Shoot for the Cure campaign. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. in the Athletic Complex Gym.
