WATERLOO, Ont. (November 13, 2013) - Welcome to the 10th edition of This Week in Laurier Athletics for the 2013-14 season. In this week's edition, we look ahead to a busy weekend of action at home for basketball and men's hockey.
FEATURED GAME: Men's Hockey vs Nipissing (Friday, November 15 - 7:30 p.m.)
After picking up their first win of the season last weekend, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks return to the friendly confines of the Waterloo Recreation Complex as they host the Nipissing Lakers on Friday night.
The Hawks and Lakers are meeting for just the third time ever with each team having recorded a victory in the previous two meetings. Back in 2009, Laurier won the first meeting between the two teams, taking it by a final score of 7-3 while Nipissing responded in 2011 with a narrow 5-4 win.
Laurier enters this game after posting a 1-1 record on their Quebec road trip last weekend. The Hawks opened the trip with a 6-4 win over Concordia before losing 4-0 to UQTR. Meanwhile, the Lakers come into this contest having recorded three straight losses, including being swept at home last weekend by the Windsor Lancers.
One player who has really shone for Laurier so far this season is second year forward Derek Schoenmakers
of Kitchener, Ont. Schoenmakers leads Laurier in goals and points this season, having scored six times already in 2013-14. On the other side of the puck, Grant Toulmin of Langley, B.C., has been on fire to start the year, scoring 10 times while adding five assists in the Lakers first 10 games.
Tickets for Friday's game are $8 for adults, $2 for Laurier students and $6 for seniors and other students, and they can be purchased online at tickets.laurierathletics.com
or at the gate on game day.
