Laurier: 61 Toronto: 47
TORONTO, Ont. (Nov. 8, 2013) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's basketball team hit the road for the first this season Friday night when they traveled to Toronto to take on the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. The Hawks would stretch their season opening winning streak to three games besting the Varsity Blues 61-47.
For the second game in a row, rookie SARAH DILLON
of Welland, Ont., led the Golden Hawks in scoring draining 15 points, including connecting on three shots from behind the three point line.
Putting up 14 additional points for Laurier was Guelph, Ont., native Laura Doyle
. Doyle would also lead the Hawks with eight rebounds in the game.
Controlling the Toronto offence was Liane Bailey of Montreal, who put up 18 of the Blues' 47 points.
While the teams battled back and forth through the three first quarters, the Hawks were able to slowly pull away thanks largely to their ability to drain the ball from outside the arc. The Hawks shot 42.9 percent from three-point range with Doyle alone draining four. Toronto managed only 15.4 percent from downtown.
With the win, the Hawks remain at the top of the OUA West division with a 3-0 start, all the while injuries have reduced them to a 10 player bench.
The Hawks will look to continue their perfect start Saturday night when they visit the Ryerson Rams. Tip off for the game is schedule for 6 p.m. at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
