WATERLOO, Ont. (November 1, 2013) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's basketball team improved to 2-0 with a 75-54 win over the Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday afternoon.

Despite putting up 19 points in the first quarter the Hawks were unable to hold off the Laurentian offence and would end up trailing by a basket at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter would prove to be the one that swung the momentum fully in favour of the Hawks who would hold the Voyageurs to only six points and take over the lead which they would not relinquish for the rest of the game.

Stepping up for the Hawks, who are without a number of veteran players, was rookie guard SARAH DILLON of Welland, Ont., who led Laurier with an impressive 16 points in the game.

Dillon was helped by Samantha Jacobs of Enniskillen, Ont., and Heather Payne of North Bay, Ont., who managed 11 and 10 points respectively.

Ensuring that the Hawks kept the Voyageurs off the boards was Lee Anna Osei of Toronto, who led the Hawks with 12 rebounds, eight of which were at the defensive end of the floor.

Leading the Voyageurs in scoring was Erin Simpson of Sudbury, Ont., who put up 10 points. Jaime Soffer of Kanata, Ont., also managed nine points for Laurentian.

The game came down to the Hawks superior shooting percentage. The purple and gold drained 44.9 percent of their field goal attempts while the Voyageurs only managed to hit 29.4 percent of theirs. The Hawks also managed to connect on six shots from outside the three point line.

Laurier will look to take their strong performance on the road Friday when they travel the University of Toronto to take on the Varsity Blues. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the University Sports Gym.
