Lacrosse Hawks Claim OUA Championship!
Laurier: 10 OUA Championships - Toronto: 9
The Laurier Women’s Lacrosse Team captured their first ever OUA championship at Queen’s University this past weekend. The Hawks entered the tournament playoffs first in the West based on their regular season record of 9 wins, 2 losses and a tie.

The first game of the weekend saw Laurier facing 4th in the West York Yeowomen. Goalie Arlene Stratton maintained a shutout until 11:45 of the second half and only allowed two goals in the entire game. Laurier, on the other hand, was able to beat the York goalie eleven times even though the women in red mounted a strong defense. Scoring for Laurier were Vanessa Cowlen with 4 goals, Emily Watson with 3 goals and an assist, Meaghan DeSouza with one goal and three assists, Sandy Palumbo recorded a goal and an assist, Brooke Porter and Isabelle Hodge scored singles and defender Courtney Campbell was credited with an assist. Final Score: Hawks 11 – York 2. The Hawks were heading to the Semi-Final! Player of the game for Laurier was Vanessa Cowlen.

Saturday saw the Hawks were up against two time defending champion Queen’s Golden Gaels. In our only other meeting this year Laurier had won a close see-saw battle 15-14 on home turf. The score at half-time was Laurier 4 – Queen’s 3 and it looked like we were in for another close one. Queen’s tied the game at 5 all early in the second half but the Hawks came back with two quick goals. At the fifteen minute mark of the half the score was 8-7 in Laurier’s favour. Laurier scored three more times before Queen’s was able to find the net at with 45 seconds remaining. The last Hawk goal was scored with ten seconds left on the clock. Final Score Hawks 12 – Golden Gaels 8. We were going to the gold medal match! Scorers for the Hawks were Meaghan DeSouza with 3 goals and 3 assists, Emily Watson and Isabelle Hodge with 3 goals each and rookie starters Caitlin Orth, Brooke Porter and Cheryl Hooper with singles. Player of the game was Meaghan DeSouza.

On a brisk, sunny Sunday afternoon Laurier took the field against a U of T team unbeaten in the regular season and playoffs. Laurier scored first but U of T came back with two goals before the Hawks were able to score again. The Blues led 5-2 at the twenty-minute mark. Laurier scored twice late in the half to keep the game within reach. The Hawks took the lead in the game for the first time since the opening goal at the twenty minute mark but U of T notched the tying goal at 23:01. Captain and OUA MVP Emily Watson broke away from her defender and took a pass from Meaghan DeSouza to score the winning goal with 1:06 left in the game. The Hawks were able to win the draw and maintain possession of the ball for the final minute. Hawks win their first OUA Championship 10 – 9! Scoring for the Purple and Gold were Emily Watson with 3 goals, Meaghan DeSouza with 2 goals and 3 assists, Sandy Palumbo with two goals and Vanessa Cowlen, Brooke Porter and Cheryl Hooper with singles. Player of the game was Emily Watson.

At the banquet Saturday night Emily Watson was named West MVP and given the Spirit Award for her contributions to the game of lacrosse. Goalie Arlene Stratton and attacker Meaghan DeSouza were named to the OUA allstar team.

The Lacrosse Hawks would like to thank the Athletic Department, JAMIE CARLSON and Andy Playter, Jeremy, Ari and Paul at the website and the Stadium Staff for the support this season. We would also like to acknowledge our fans who cheered us on both at home and away. A special thanks goes to our trainer Julie Smith who not only dealt with our injuries but also acted as conditioning coach. She did a great job!

Our nomination for athlete of the week is the Laurier Women’s Lacrosse Team because it was truly a team effort.
