WATERLOO, Ont. (July 11, 2013) - The Wilfrid Laurier University Department of Athletics and Recreation is proud to announce that 49 student-athletes will earn either OUA Academic All-Star or CIS Academic All-Canadian recognition following the 2012-13 season.
The Golden Hawks 20 varsity teams are made up of over 400 student-athletes meaning over 10 percent of the student-athlete population qualified for the award. The OUA Academic All-Star and CIS Academic All-Canadian awards recognize those who achieve an academic average of 80 percent or higher for the school year.
"We are extremely proud of our student-athletes who have achieved this special recognition," said PETER BAXTER
, Lauriers director of athletics and recreation. "To be able to balance their athletic and school commitments can be a very challenging task and to be able to have more than 10 percent of our athletes achieve that accomplishment is truly inspiring."
"Successes like these continue to highlight the impact of being a student-athlete has on one's life," added Baxter. "As we saw last year, research here at Laurier, conducted by professor William McTeer, has shown that our student-athletes graduate at a higher-rate than their non-athlete counterparts while also holding a higher average GPA. So not only are our student-athletes producing outstanding results on the field of play, they are also showing that they will grow into the leaders of tomorrow."
Laurier's womens soccer team led the way with seven athletes earning CIS Academic All-Canadian awards followed closely by men's cross country (six) and men's football (five). Men's rugby was the leading team amongst the sports who qualify for the OUA Academic All-Star award with four recipients.
