Women's basketball announces 2013-14 recruits
WATERLOO, Ont. (June 6, 2013) - Wilfrid Laurier University women's basketball head coach Paul Falco will have three new additions next season as he announced his 2013-14 recruiting class on Thursday.

Joining the Golden Hawks in September will be a pair of guards in NICOLE MORRISON of Hamilton, and Sarah Dillon of Welland, Ont., along with forward Alexandra Spadaro of Grimsby, Ont.

"We are very pleased to add three talented players in Nicole, Alex, and Sarah to our returning veteran lineup," said Falco of his recruiting class. "These players have been fortunate enough to receive some excellent coaching at both the club and high school level and Nicole, Alex, and Sarah have played together on various teams the last few years. All three girls are honour roll students and will be excellent additions to the Laurier community."

Morrison, a 5-5 guard, joins the Golden Hawks after a stellar career at Westdale High School in Hamilton. The 2011-12 Girls Basketball MVP led her team to three straight city championships and four straight OFSAA appearances. Morrison also saw success with her club team, the Blessed Sacrament Yellow Jackets as she helped the team win two Ontario Basketball Association (OBA) Championships in 2008-09 and 2009-10, as well as an OBA bronze medal in 2010-11.

Outside of basketball, Morrison is also known for her prowess in powerlifting where she is a two-time champion in 2011-12 and 2012-13.

"I chose Laurier because of the welcoming atmosphere the school and team had when I first visited," said Morrison on her decision to commit to the Golden Hawks. "All the girls were so friendly and made me feel like a part of the team before I even decided where I was going. For me Laurier was the school that I compared every other school to, and nowhere else made me feel as at home."

Joining Morrison in the backcourt will be Dillon, a 5-10 guard who suited up for Jean-Vanier Catholic Secondary School in Welland, Ont. While playing for Jean-Vanier, Dillon was a member of their back-to-back OFSSA A Champion teams, winning the high school title in 2011 and 2012. Known for her shooting ability, Dillon is also a two-time OFSAA three-point champion.

Away from high school, Dillon was also a member of the OBA silver medalist Welland Saints and last year played for the Hamilton Foxtrotters with both Morrison and Spadaro.

"I was looking for something specific in all the schools I visited and when I visited Laurier, that something clicked," commented Dillon on why she chose Laurier. "In that moment I knew that I wanted to spend the next 4-5 years here."

The third member of Coach Falcos class this year is Spadaro, a 5-11 forward who was teammates with Dillon at Jean-Vanier in Welland. Spadaro was also a member of Jean-Vanier's back-to-back OFSAA A Championship squads. However, prior to attending Jean-Vanier she attended Grimsby Secondary School where she was named the Girls Basketball MVP in both 2009-10 and 2010-11.

"I'm so happy to be going to Laurier next year," said Spadaro on attending Laurier. "Coming from a school of 500, I like that it's a smaller community and I felt welcome on campus during my tour with Coach Falco. Basketball-wise, I like the way that the girls play, the games I went to see were always fast paced and exciting to watch. I feel like I can learn a lot from the girls on the team and I'm eager to get started."

The Laurier Golden Hawks women's basketball team kick off their regular season at home on Friday, November 1 when they take on the Algoma Thunderbirds, who will be making their debut in the OUA.
