Tikka becomes second Hawk to join K-W United

WATERLOO, Ont. (May 9, 2013) - K-W United FC announced this week that Canadian defender Kelsey Tikka has signed with the W-League team for the upcoming season.

Tikka, from Thunder Bay, Ont., comes off a stellar season with the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, being named the women's soccer team's most valuable player, and being awarded the President's Award for female athlete of the year.

As a third-year defender with the Hawks, Tikka was named a CIS All-Canadian for the second consecutive season, earning second-team honours and was named an OUA first-team all-star. Tikka helped Laurier repeat as OUA West champions and earn a silver medal in the OUA, and advancing to the CIS national championships in Victoria, B.C.

Tikka was also recently named to Canada's women's soccer team for the 2013 FISU Games in Russia and has previously played for the Victoria Highlanders FC of the W-League.

"Tikka will bring a committed and honest approach to every training session," K-W United FC president BARRY MACLEAN said. "She's a great leader and has fantastic technical ability and reads the game exceptionally well. She's been a mainstay at the Laurier women's team for the last three years.

In previous years while at Laurier, Tikka has won the CIS women's soccer Rookie of the Year award, as well as being named the CIS tournament MVP and the OUA West rookie of the year. Laurier also named her the rookie of the year in her first year with the team, where she helped the Hawks claim the OUA gold medal.

"[She] has been an integral piece of the success of the program," MacLean added.

Tikka and the W-League team will open their season on May 22nd at their home field, University Stadium, when they play the London Gryphons. Game time is 7 p.m.
