AMHERSTBURG, Ont. (April 9, 2013) - After weeks of indoor practices, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's baseball team kicked off the 2013 spring schedule with a four game series at the University of Windsor in Amhertsburg. The Golden Hawks quickly shook off the winter rust and swept the four games and played some great baseball along the way.
Laurier got off to a fast start jumping out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Windsor replied with a run of their own in the bottom of the first, but that is the closest that the Lancers would come in this one. Strong Laurier pitching kept the Lancer bats at bay and a single run in the third inning and another two runs in the fourth inning were enough for the Golden Hawks in this one.
Jordan Petruska picked up the win going 3 innings giving up 1 run on 0 hits with 4 walks and 1 strikeout. Chad Muse worked 2 innings giving up 1 run on 2 hits with 4 strikeouts. Andrew Ziedins picked up the save working 2 innings giving up 0 runs on 1 hit with 1 walk and 4 strikeouts.
Offensively, the Golden Hawks were led by SS Trevor Nyp who was 3 for 4 with a double and 3 runs scored. Other contributors included: CF Jonathan Brouse who was 1 for 3 with 2 runs scored, RF Alex Kupchak who was 1 for 4 with 2 RBI, LF Brandon Manley 1 for 2 with an RBI and 2 walks, 3B Brandon Washkevich 1 for 3 with an RBI and 1B Adam Shaver 1 for 4 with an RBI. DH Phil Warner also added a single, his first as a Golden Hawk.
Much like game one, Laurier jumped out early in game two as LF Adam Raithby led off the game with a double and was driven home by CF Jonathan Brouse. Windsor notched a run in the second when Laurier starter Brett van Pelt hit a batter with the bases loaded to push in a run. Laurier then exploded for five runs in the fifth inning and never looked back, cruising to an 11-4 win.
van Pelt threw 3 innings giving up 1 run on 0 hits with 1 walk and 4 strikeouts. Josh Appel picked up the win going 2 innings giving up 2 runs on 2 hits with 4 walks. Dan Connerty finished up the pitching duties going 2 innings giving up 1 run on 2 hits with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts.
Laurier pounded out 12 hits, led by 3B Jeff Slasor who was 2 for 2 with 2 walks and 3 runs scored, RF Adam Raithby 2 for 3 with a double and 3 runs scored, CF Jonathan Brouse 2 for 3 with 3 RBI and a run scored, SS Chad Keohane 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored, 3B Brandon Washkevich 1 for 2 with an RBI and 1B McKenzie Maxwell 1 for 4 with a 3 run HR. Other RBI went to 2B Trevor Nyp, RF Phil Warner and DH Brandon Manley and DH John King also had a hit to round out the attack.
Sunday's double header started off with a bang for Laurier as the first five hitters in the line-up reached base and all five scored. The 5-0 lead was enough for Laurier starter Ian Filion as he worked 3 great innings and two more runs in the third inning and another 2 in the fourth were more than enough for offence for the Golden Hawks who tacked on one more run in the seventh for good measure.
Filion registered the win going 3 innings giving up 0 runs on 1 hit with 2 walks. Zachary Danilewitz was really solid working 2 scoreless innings giving up 1 hit with 2 strikeouts. Jake Tougas finished up with 2 scoreless innings giving up 2 hits, 1 walk with 1 strikeout.
The Golden Hawks put up another strong offensive performance with 12 more hits in this one, led by: DH McKenzie Maxwell 2 for 3 with a double, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored, 3B John King 2 for 3, SS Chad Keohane 2 for 3 with an RBI, LF Adam Raithby 1 for 3 with a double, run scored and 3 RBI, 2B Trevor Nyp 1 for 3 with an RBI and run scored and RF Alex Kupchak 1 for 3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Other hits went to CF Jonathan Brouse, LF Yoon Jae Chung and C Andrew Czuchnicki.
The fourth and final game of the weekend was the closest game as the Golden Hawks squeaked out a 3-1 win to sweep the series. With the game tied 1-1 in the top of the fifth, Laurier manufactured the go-ahead run when, with two out, CF Brandon Manley stole second base and used his great hustle to score on an infield single by 2B Jeff Slasor. Brandon Washkevich drove in an insurance run in the sixth inning to seal the victory for the Golden Hawks.
Adam McBride was very good as Laurier's starter, going 3 innings giving up 0 runs on 3 hits with 3 strikeouts and 0 walks. Justin Newbold picked up the win in relief going 2 innings giving up 1 run on 3 hits with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. Greg Greenberg gets the save going 2 innings giving up 0 runs on 2 hits with 2 walks and 1 strikeout.
The offence cooled off a little in game four, however three runs proved to be enough thanks to the strong pitching performance. Offensively the Hawks were led by DH Phil Warner who was 2 for 2 with a double. RBIs went to 2B Jeff Slasor, LF Adam Raithby and 3B Brandon Washkevich with Slasor, Washkevich and Chung all registered a hit a piece.
"This was a terrific weekend for our program," commented Laurier Head Coach SCOTT BALLANTYNE. "Everyone was anxious to get outside and play in some game action after a long run of indoor practice. We used 12 pitchers and all threw well for their first outings of the season. All 15 of our position players picked up at least one hit and we had some big performances from some of our younger players who have worked hard during the off-season to prove that they deserve a bigger role next fall. We saw a lot of positives as we build towards next fall and making a run at an OUA Championship."
