Daniels named OUA West Most Valuable Player
HAMILTON, Ont. (February 27, 2013) - For the second time in his career with the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's hockey team, goaltender Ryan Daniels of Pickering, Ont., has been named the OUA West Division Most Valuable Player as the conference announced the division award winners and all-stars on Wednesday afternoon.

This season Daniels was instrumental in leading Laurier to 14-12-2 record. The fourth year business major saw action in 27 games, seeing nearly 1,600 minutes of ice time. He faced the second-most shots of any OUA goaltender (972), topped the OUA in saves with 894, posted two shutouts and also topped in the conference in save percentage at .920 for goaltenders with 20 or more games played.

Daniels was also influential in the Golden Hawks late-season surge to claim fifth place in the OUA West, despite being out of a playoff position in late November. Daniels was also named the OUA West Top Goaltender, and became an all-star for the third time, begin named to the first team this year after second team honours last year and a first team nod in 2010-11.

Daniels was also awarded the OUA West MVP and Top Goaltender back in 2010-11.

Also honoured on Wednesday was Golden Hawks head coach GREG PUHALSKI who was named the OUA West Coach of the Year.

The award is the first for Puhalski in his third season behind the bench for Laurier. His team finished the regular season with a 14-12-2 record, but was defined by a late season push that saw his squad win nine of their final 12 games to finish in fifth. Puhalski becomes the first Golden Hawks coach to be honoured as Coach of the Year since the 1998-99 season.

Finally, Derek Holden, a rookie defenceman for the Hawks, was named to the All-Rookie Team. The former member of the Ontario Hockey League's Windsor Spitfires, Holden established himself as one of the top offensive defenceman in the province this year. Ranked 16th overall in defenceman scoring, and second among rookie blueliners, Holden's success was anchored by a stretch of games in late January that saw him record eight points in three contests.
