WATERLOO, Ont. (February 25, 2013) - The Wilfrid Laurier Department of Athletics and Recreation is pleased to announce that Damon Allen, a four-time Grey Cup champion and former record holder of the all-time passing yards mark in Pro football, will be the keynote speaker at the 14th Annual Friends of Golden Hawk Football Reception and Dinner, presented by Sun Life Financial, on April 25, 2013.
Allen, considered to be one of the greatest Canadian Football League (CFL) quarterbacks of all-time, played 23 seasons in the league with six different clubs. He won his first Grey Cup championship in 1987 with the Edmonton Eskimos, earning offensive MVP honours for the game. He would go on to win the league championship three more time, including his final one in 2004 when he overcame a fractured leg to lead the Toronto Argonauts to the title, earning his third Grey Cup MVP trophy.
However, perhaps the ageless quarterback's greatest success was becoming Pro football's all-time passing leader back in 2006. In a game against the arch-rival Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Allen, playing with the Argonauts at the time, passed Warren Moon's record of 70,553 yards. He would go on to finish his career with 72,381 yards, one of only four players to ever surpass 70,000 career yards.
Since the completion of his career, Allen, the younger brother of National Football League Hall-of-Famer and Super Bowl MVP, Marcus Allen, has been active in the Toronto community throughout the year including being a supporter of the Argonauts' Anti-Bullying and Stop the Violence campaigns.
"Damon is one of the greatest leaders to ever play the game of football and we are honoured to have him speak at our event," commented Peter Baxter, Wilfrid Laurier's director of athletics and recreation. "His ability to inspire audiences with his positive message of leadership and teamwork will surely be the high point of the evening."
As has been the case in year's past, Allen will highlight the event with his address to the audience following dinner. However, this year, Allen will also conduct a question and answer session along with new Laurier head coach Michael Faulds. The two share many similar attributes including both holding all-time passing records as well as developing their leadership skills by playing football at the quarterback position.
Coach Faulds will also give his vision for the future of Golden Hawk football. This will include many new and exciting developments in recruiting, his new staff of coaches and a peek into the re-vamped, no-huddle offence the Hawks will implement in 2013.
