Chaput, Holden named Athletes of the Week

WATERLOO, Ont. (January 28, 2013) - Women's basketball guard Bree Chaput of Guelph, Ont., and men's hockey defenceman Derek Holden of Peterborough, Ont., have been named the Laurier Bookstore Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 27, 2013.

Chaput set a new career single-game high with 17 points to go along with three rebounds, three assists and three steals as the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks completed a weekend sweep of the Lakhead Thunderwolves on Saturday night. The third year kinesiology and physical education major finished the game an impressive 8-of-11 from the floor to help the Hawks to a 65-55 win. One night earlier in Laurier's 71-59 win, Chaput added 11 points and four rebounds as she posted double digits in scoring in consecutive games for the first time this season.

This marks the first time in Chaput's time at Laurier that she has been named the Female Athlete of the Week.

Derek Holden, a rookie defenceman from Peterborough, Ont., was an offensive force for the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks over the weekend as he recorded six points. In Friday's 6-4 loss to Waterloo, the former Windsor Spitfire was in on every Laurier goal as he scored once and had three assists. The arts major followed that up with a two assist effort in the Hawks 4-2 win over the Brock Badgers. Holden's six points moved him into a tie for the OUA Rookie Defenceman scoring lead with 15 points on the season (4 G, 11 A).

Holden is also being honoured for the first time as the Male Athlete of the Week.
