Laurier swim team has strong start to 2013
GUELPH, Ont. (January 13, 2013) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks swim team kicked off the New Year in Guelph with the Guelph Invitational where a group of Laurier swimmers competed in the one-day meet. Leading the team as captains for the day was Derek Davies and Jade Scognamillo.  

Three female swimmers and one male swimmer placed top eight in their individual events. Rookie swimmer Paige Mohaupt of Waterloo, Ont., placed seventh in 50m backstroke with a time of 35.21. Also, first year swimmer Lily Godawa of Toronto, finished sixth in 200m individual medley with 2:38.93 and a remarkable second place finish in the 400m individual medley with 5:21.55. Second year swimmer Jade Scognamillo of Caledon, Ont., came in fifth place in 50m breastroke in a time of 38.33 and an impressive third place finish for the 100m individual medley in 1:13.59. Rounding up the top eight finishes was rookie male swimmer Richard Naylor of Tottenham, Ont., finishing fifth in 100m breaststroke with 1:12.67. 

The Relays proved to have the strongest results of the day with all relays placing top six. Up first, Peter Burns of Whitby, Ont., (26.49), Steven Tang of Brampton, Ont., (27.43), Brayden Libawski of Caledon, Ont., (28.85) and Derek Davies of Brantford, Ont., (27.43), competed in the mens 200m freestyle relay, finishing in fifth place with a time of 1:50.20. Following the men, the womens team consisting of Kaitlyn Patterson of Orangeville, Ont., (30.42), Leila Bautista of Mississauga, Ont., (29.93), Alexandra Konson of Toronto, (30.84) and Scognamillo (29.47) finished fourth place in 2:00.66. 

The final event of the day was the 200m medley relay. The mens team, Michael Golian of Toronto, (30.37), Naylor (33.13), Davies (30.05) and Burns (27.49) placed fifth in a time of 2:01.04. Closing up the meet with a sixth place finish was Mohaupt (36.31), Sara Pearson of Oakville, Ont., (39.99), Jessica Cloutier of Mississauga, Ont., (32.80) and KATRINA BEVERLY of Maple, Ont., (29.68) in 2:18.78. 

The Guelph Invitational proved to be a beneficial training meet for the upcoming important competitions, including the OUA and CIS Championships. Up next for the Hawks is a dual meet against University of Waterloo swimmers on January 15th, 2013.
