OTTAWA (October 30, 2012) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's basketball has been ranked No. 9 in the CIS after the first poll of the season was announced by university sport's national body on Tuesday.
Head Coach PAUL FALCO
and the Hawks have had an impressive preseason run that saw them post a 6-1 record, including victories over McGill and No. 8 Acadia, who both participated at the CIS Championship last year. The only contest Laurier dropped was to No. 4 Carleton at the Ravens tournament two weeks ago.
While the team's success can be directly attributed to the depth on their roster, rookie guard Kaitlyn Schenck
of Kitchener, Ont., and forward Whitney Ellenor
of Pickering, Ont., did stand out for Laurier during their seven game non-conference schedule. Ellenor averaged 10.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per game while Schenck showed she is ready to play at the CIS level, averaging 9.4 points per game.
Laurier's women's soccer team maintained their No. 6 ranking in the final Top 10 of the season thanks to a dominating 5-1 victory over the Guelph Gryphons in the OUA Quarter-finals last weekend. The Hawks now travel to Ottawa for their fifth consecutive appearance in the OUA Final Four tournament where they will face the No. 7 Queen's Gaels in the semifinals on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Hawks women's hockey team held on to the No. 7 seed after picking up a three out of a possible four points this past weekend. Laurier defeated the Waterloo Warriors 3-0 and dropped a narrow 4-3 overtime decision to the No. 6 Queen's Gaels.
