TORONTO (May 23, 2012) - The Rogers Centre in Toronto was the scene for the sixth annual OUA Baseball All-Star Showcase on Sunday afternoon. The 2011 OUA Champion University of Toronto Varsity Blues jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the first inning and carried that through to an 8-2 victory over the OUA All-Stars.
The Golden Hawks were well represented in the game with two players, a coach and a trainer participating in the game. 2011 OUA Rookie of the Year Jonathan Brouse started and played all nine innings in left field for the all-stars. Brouse went 1-3 with a walk and scored one of the two runs on the day for the All-Stars. 3B Ryan Panas made his third All-Star appearance and finished 1-2 with a single. Laurier Head Coach SCOTT BALLANTYNE and trainer Kylie Masur served on the staff for the All-Star team.
Two other Golden Hawks were also selected to participate in the game but were unable to participate due to commitments with their summer teams. LHP Brett van Pelt made a start in the IBL for the Hamilton Cardinals and went 5 2/3 innings against an extremely powerful Barrie Baycats line-up. Darnell Duckett, a member of the Kitchener Panthers of the IBL, was in Ottawa as the Panthers took 2 of 3 from the Ottawa Fat Cats. Duckett had a very productive weekend going 6-16 in the three games.
"I am very proud of how our guys performed today on this large stage," commented Head Coach, SCOTT BALLANTYNE, who is also the convenor of the All-Star game. "Brouse and Panas are two of the top players in the league and they showed that today with their contributions to the game. This is always a great event and we'd like to thank the Blue Jays organization for helping to pull it all together."
