Mancino leads Hawks to win over Warriors

WATERLOO, Ont. (February 15, 2012) - Thanks to a strong shooting night from the entire lineup, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (13-7) guaranteed themselves at least a third place finish in the OUA West division thanks to a 75-45 victory over the Waterloo Warriors (1-20) on Wednesday night.

As a team, the Hawks shot an impressive 46.6 percent from the floor including a blistering 48 percent (11-of-23) from three point range. The 11 three pointers are the most in a single game this season by the purple and gold.

After a tight first quarter that saw the Hawks lead by just two point, Laurier outscored the Warriors 16-9 in the second quarter to grab a nine point lead at the half.

The Warriors managed to hang around in the third quarter but a 27 point explosion by Laurier in the fourth sealed away their 13th victory of the season, the fourth most in team history. 

Fifth year forward Christa Mancino of Port Colborne, Ont., led the way for the Hawks, who were playing without their two leading scorers, Felicia Mazerolle of Elliot Lake, Ont., and Shelby Kurt of Waterloo, Ont. The veteran scored 19 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. 

Laura Doyle of Guelph, Ont., and COURTNEY BRUCE of Orillia, Ont., also had a strong games for the Hawks as they both recorded career-highs for points in a game. Doyle scored a career-best 17 points thanks to a 5-of-7 performance from three point range while Bruce finished with 12 points while playing a career-high 29 minutes. 

Marti Killeen of Oakville, Ont., led Waterloo with 12 points on the night.

The Hawks will now wrap up their regular season schedule on Saturday afternoon when they take on the McMaster Marauders in Hamilton. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
