WATERLOO, Ont. (August 17, 2011) - Wilfrid Laurier women's hockey coach RICK OSBORNE
announced today the four members of his recruiting class for the 2011-12 season.
Thunder, a graduate of Balmoral Hall School in Winnipeg, joins the Golden Hawks after spending last season with the London Devilettes of the Provincial Womens Hockey League (PWHL). Appearing in 18 games with London last year, Thunder posted a 7-9-2 record with a 3.12 GAA and a 0.885 SV% while posting one shutout.
Osborne believes that Thunder will add to the competition for the starting goaltender position this season. "Erika is a hard working, athletic goalie with great reflexes who has tremendous upside to her game. She will be part of a solid goaltending team on this years team," said Osborne.
Hurrell comes to Laurier after an extremely strong season last year with the Brampton Thunder of the PWHL. In 36 regular season contests with Brampton, the 5-6 forward scored 11 goals and 15 assists. Hurrell then added two goals and an assist in six playoff games.
Osborne sees Hurrell as a player who will adapt to the Hawks style of play immediately. "Jessie is a quick, smooth skating forward who can find open space in the offensive zone on the attack," commented Osborne. "She will fit in nicely with the Hawks' style of play."
Im is another graduate of the PWHL after suiting up for the Toronto Junior Aeros last season. In 36 games, Im tallied 24 points (12 G, 12 A) while notching three game winning goals. She also scored five points in eight playoff games.
"Danelle is a skilled, fast skating forward who sees the ice well," said Osborne. "Her puckhandling and passing skills make her a welcome addition to this year's Hawks."
Baxter, a product of the Waterloo Ravens Midgets, will be a welcome addition to a young and talented blueline with the Hawks. "Hayley is a dependable defencewoman who will be encouraged to lead and join the rush at times," commented Osborne. "She also adds a physical presence when she is on the ice which compliments her game nicely."
The Golden Hawks will debut their new faces in their regular season opener on October 8 when they travel to London to take on the Western Mustangs. Lauriers home opener is on October 29 against the UOIT Ridgebacks.
