Men's baseball adds three more recruits
WATERLOO, Ont. (August 16, 2011) - Head Coach SCOTT BALLANTYNE is pleased to announce the commitment of the following student-athletes for the 2011 season.

Position: OF
Hometown: Waterloo, ON
2011 Summer Team: Hamilton Thunderbirds (IBL)
Program: General Arts
Coach Ballantyne's Comments: Darnell is a great athlete who will make an immediate impact as a top player in the OUA.  Darnell comes to us after spending 2 years at Darton College in Georgia.  In 2010 he was awarded a Georgia Junior College Gold Glove for his work in centre field.  Darnell played in the PBLO for the Ontario Blue Jays and was a member of gold medal winning Team Ontario at the 2008 Canada Cup along with current Laurier Golden Hawk, Brett van Pelt.  Despite being only 20 years old, Darnell has played 3 seasons in the IBL as a member of the Hamilton Thunderbirds.  He hit .243 this summer with 1 homerun and 7 stolen bases.  We are thrilled to have Darnell patrolling our outfield this fall and he, along with Nathan Loehle and Ryan Panas will form an extremely tough top of the order for us in 2011.

McKenzie Maxwell
Position: RHP/3B
Hometown:  London, ON
2011 Summer Team: London Badgers U18 (PBLO)
Program:  Psychology
Coach Ballantyne's Comments: McKenzie is a late addition to our roster and I am really looking forward to adding him to our line-up.  McKenzie is a member of the powerhouse midget program, the London Badgers.  Maxwell and his Badger teammates were recently crowned Ontario Midget AAA champions and will represent Ontario at the Canadian Championships in Regina Saskatchewan.  A very versatile player, Maxwell has had a tremendous season both at the plate and on the mound.  He hit .422 over 206 plate appearances including 17 doubles, 2 homeruns and 19 stolen bases.  On the mound, he racked up an 8-3 record over 72 innings with an ERA of 2.25.  McKenzie's versatility and experience playing in big games will help us immensely in the fall.  As a former member of the London Badgers, I'm very excited to add another Badger alumni to our program.

Position: OF
Hometown: Mississauga, ON
2011 Summer Team: Ontario Blue Jays U18 (PBLO)
Program: BBA
Coach Ballantyne's Comments:  Alex is a graduate of the Ontario Blue Jays program and joins a number of other Ontario Blue Jay graduates on the Golden Hawks.  Alex has a great baseball frame as he stands 6-1 and has very good hitting tools.  He is a line-drive hitter who has a powerful arm from the OF.  The Appleby College product will add depth to a very strong outfield and will compete for a spot in the starting line-up from the first day that he arrives at camp.

The Golden Hawks open training camp on Fri. August 26th with the home opener scheduled for Wed. September 7th at Bechtel Park vs. cross-town rival, Waterloo.
