WATERLOO, Ont. (August 2, 2011) - Wilfrid Laurier University's Department of Athletics and Recreation announced today its new sport model which will allow the department to continue to strive towards its vision of developing the best Athletics and Recreations program in the country.
The model, which will be put in place beginning this season, has been shaped to better meet the needs of a growing student population that has increased by nearly 10,000 students over the past 15 years. By implementing this model, it will allow the department to deliver a full breadth of services in the form of competitive Interuniversity sport programs, high-quality intramural programs as well as the introduction of recreational and intramural clubs. It will also strengthen the department's ability to properly allocate the resources at its disposal.
"With the needs of our student population changing and the continued financial constraints being imposed on university athletic and recreation departments, we believed it was time to restructure so that we could continue to have success in all the areas in which we operate," commented Director of Athletics and Recreation PETER BAXTER
. "This new model will allow us to ensure that this happens."
In response to the updated OUA sport model, which was announced in 2009-10, Laurier's current Interuniversity sport teams will now better align with the overall goals of the athletic conference. By doing this, it will allow Laurier Interuniversity teams to continue to achieve the high standards of success they have enjoyed thus far at both the provincial and national level.
"Interuniversity sport continues to be the face of our department and in order to keep all of our teams competitive, we needed to align with what our conference has done," said Baxter. "Unfortunately, to do this, we needed to make some tough decisions, and one of those was the decision to drop volleyball from our sport offering this past April."
One of the key aspects of the new model is the structure it provides for recreational competitive clubs and intramural/recreational clubs which were previously sanctioned under the Wilfrid Laurier University Student Union (WLUSU). These clubs will now be able to apply for official status within the Department of Athletics and Recreation by completing a clubs sanctioning application process.
"By bringing these clubs under our umbrella, it allows us to better manage all the recreational opportunities being offered at the university," commented Baxter. "Aligning them to what we are doing here in the department will allow them to become a part of the athletic and recreational success we are accustomed to here at Laurier."
The model is broken into five categories which include Interuniversity Sport Market Driven, Interuniversity Sport High Performance, Competitive Sport Club OUA/CIS, Competitive Sport Club non-OUA and Intramural/Recreational Club. Each category will receive a designated level of service from the department based on the available resources. These services include items such as athletic therapy, coaching, facility usage, fundraising support, travel, communications and publications as well as video and technology.
