12 commit to men's baseball for 2011
WATERLOO, Ont. (July 4, 2011) SCOTT BALLANTYNE, head coach of Wilfrid Laurier's men's baseball team, is pleased to announce the commitment of 12 student-athletes for the 2011 season.

Tino Silvestri
Position - OF/2B
Hometown - Waterloo, ON
2011 Summer Team - Kitchener-Waterloo Jr. Panthers (JICBL)
Program - General Arts
Coach Ballantyne's Comments: I've had the pleasure of coaching Tino for the past 3 years with the Jr. Panthers.  He is an extremely versatile player who can play all 3 outfield positions as well as second base.  He is a coach's dream in that he plays hard every game and leaves it all on the field.  He is a left-handed hitter with a ton of speed that will compliment Nathan Loehle at the top of our order.  Tino is a quality young man that we are very happy to have in our program.

Position - RHP
Hometown - Mississauga, ON
2011 Summer Team - Mississauga Twins (COBA Senior)
Program - Psychology
Coach Ballantyne's Comments: Jordan first caught my eye back in the fall of 2009 as he is a right handed pitcher with a lot of life on his fastball.  Jordan decided to stay back for a fifth year of high school and chose Laurier to study Psychology.  Jordan is someone that we are thrilled to add to our program as we have watched him for a couple of years now.  He has great size and will have an opportunity to compete for a role in the starting rotation from day one.

Chris Wachon
Position - LHP
Hometown - Whitby, ON
2011 Summer Team - East York Midget
Program - BBA
Coach Ballantyne's Comments:  A graduate of the baseball powerhouse, Sinclair Secondary School in Whitby, Chris is a very experienced left-handed pitcher. Chris has great command of all his pitches and knows how to win.  He is a former member of Team Ontario and currently plays for the East York Midget Team in the Toronto Midget League.  Anytime you can add a left-handed pitcher to your staff you have to be happy, but to add a lefty with the ability of Chris is something special.  Chris impressed us with his demeanour and his command and I look for him, along with Petruska, McBride and Greenberg to compete for a starting spot in our rotation.

Position - 2B/SS
Hometown - Kitchener, ON
2011 Summer Team - Kitchener-Waterloo Jr. Panthers (JICBL)
Program - General Arts
Coach Ballantyne's Comments:  After spending one season at Oakton Community College in Illinois, Trevor has decided to return home and study and play at Laurier in 2011.  The Kitchener native is a left-handed hitting middle infielder who was a starter as a freshman at Oakton.  Trevor is a very talented player with a lot of raw ability.  He has a very strong arm and plays solid defence.  He has come up big for us this summer at the plate in some key situations.  We were not happy with our infield defence in 2010 and Trevor gives us a reliable glove we can add to our infield.  He is a very solid left-handed hitter that will give our batting order more balance in 2011.

Position - RHP
Hometown - Toronto, ON
2011 Summer Team - Toronto Mets (PBLO)
Program - BBA
Coach Ballantyne's Comments: Adam has had a great summer season with the Mets and early in the year he threw a no-hitter against the Windsor Selects, truly an impressive accomplishment.  Adam is a big kid with a good pitching repertoire.  He has had success at every level and we expect him to make an immediate impact with us in the fall.  Other current Hawks who have come through the Mets program include Ryan Panas and Adam Chong.

Position - OF
Hometown - Port Perry, ON
2011 Summer Team - Team Ontario (PBLO)
Program - Kinesiology
Coach Ballantyne's Comments:  Jonathan is a graduate of the Team Ontario program and is a great team first kind of player.  He plays great defence in the outfield and creates chaos on the base paths with his speed and tenacity.  The Port Perry native was a dual sport athlete in high school as he also excelled at volleyball.  Jonathan will study Kinesiology at Laurier and will compete for a starting spot in the Hawks outfield this season.  Jonathan reminds me a lot of our current outfielder, James Bruce.  He is not physically imposing, but he plays the game the right way and makes things happen that help the team win.  We're thrilled that Jonathan chose Laurier as I know he had multiple offers from other schools.

Position - RHP
Hometown - Richmond Hill, ON
2011 Summer Team - Ontario Prospects (ECPL)
Program - BBA
Coach Ballantyne's Comments:  Gregory comes to Laurier from the Ontario Prospects program which has produced a number of former and current Hawks, most notably, Brian MacDonald, Wes Van Luven, Bobby Lambert and Andrew Greenberg (Gregorys older brother).  Gregory is a strike thrower who I look forward to adding to our pitching staff.  He is a very bright young man and will enrol in our BBA program in the fall. We were impressed by Gregory at the Thunderbird Showcase last fall and are very excited that he chose Laurier.

Jeff Slasor
Position - INF
Hometown - Oakville, ON
2011 Summer Team - Oakville Royals (PBLO)
Program - BBA
Coach Ballantyne's Comments:  Jeff is a versatile infielder who plays 2B for Coach Booth with the Oakville Royals of the PBLO.  He is a left-handed hitter who will add more depth to our infield.  I expect that Jeff will get every opportunity to prove himself at our training camp and compete for playing time as a freshman.

Yoon Jae Chung
Position - OF
Hometown - Thornhill, ON
2011 Summer Team - Thornhill Reds Junior
Program - BBA
Coach Ballantyne's Comments:  Yoon is a very dedicated and hard working young man.  He is a former member of Ontario Blue Jays of the PBLO and is currently playing Junior for the Thornhill Reds.  In 2010 he was selected to the 40 man roster for the Ontario Youth Team and brings a lot of hard work each day to the park.  Yoon will give us added depth to the outfield.

Tyler Morrison
Position - RHP
Hometown - King City, ON
2011 Summer Team - Team Ontario (PBLO)
Program - General Arts
Coach Ballantyne's Comments:  Tyler is currently playing for Team Ontario under coach Murray Marshall and he is well liked by his teammates and coaches.  I expect that he will come into camp and work hard to prove that he can help us out in our bullpen as we look to have a very deep and reliable bullpen in 2011.

Alex Craig
Position - 1B/3B
Hometown - Etobicoke, ON
2011 Summer Team - Etobicoke Rangers Midget
Program - English
Coach Ballantyne's Comments:  Alex had a very solid year playing for his high school team in the spring under coach Rich Panas.  He is a big kid who has a lot of raw ability.  We will look to have him continue to add strength and work on his game defensively.  I expect that Alex will be an important part of our program going forward.

Position - C
Hometown - Waterloo, ON
2011 Summer Team - Kitchener-Waterloo Jr. Panthers (JICBL)
Program - Political Science
Coach Ballantyne's Comments:  Ryan is an extremely hard worker who makes up for this small size with heart and dedication.  He has impressed me with his work ethic and came up through the Ontario Nationals program under Coach Shawn Gillespie.  Ryan adds depth to our catching position and will look to continue to add size and strength as he enters training camp.

The Golden Hawks are coming off a disappointing season that saw them miss the post-season by one game.  However, 2011 shows a lot of promise as Laurier is hosting the OUA Championships in October and hope to hoist their first ever OUA Championship on home turf.

Check back during the summer for future updates as Coach Ballantyne looks to add more prospects to the Laurier Baseball program.
