Student Staff Recognized at Annual Brunch
WATERLOO, Ont. - On Tuesday Morning Wilfrid Laurier University's department of athletics and recreation hosted its annual Recreation Student Leader & Student Staff Brunch, recognizing all their achievements over the past year.  This past year was Athletics and Recreations most successful to date as it saw the largest registration for intramurals, the largest number of visitors each week in all our facilities, the largest number of people per day using the fitness centre as well as the busiest open recreation gym time for students. It was with the hard work and dedication of all our student staff that this is made possible.  Our student staff spent countless hours working towards every service that is provided to allow for the most positive experience for all participants.  Students also had the opportunity to listen to speeches made by Leanne Holland-Brown, Dean of Students as well as PETER BAXTER, Director of Athletics and Recreation.

The department also awarded 18 awards which acknowledged outstanding student leadership and contribution at Laurier. The award winners were as follows:

The Don Smith Award is for the student who has made a lasting contribution to Athletics & Recreation at Laurier.  This year's recipient was Allister Scorgie.  Allister is currently the departments Student Aquatics Co-Coordinator and has been a part of the Student Staff team for 4 years.

Outstanding Customer Service Award is for the student who portrays outstanding customer service to all visitors to our facilities.   This year's recipient was Aimee Maggiacomo.  Aimee has worked the past four years in the department, including roles, all with our Hawk Desk. Aimee is currently our Student Hawk Desk Coordinator.

Intramural Referee of the Year was awarded to Anthony Estrela.  Anthony was integral in the success of our flag footballs leagues as well as a leader amongst our referees. It is people like Anthony who make our intramural program successful.

Referee in Chief of the Year was awarded to Matt Guido and Jared Mender.  Matt and Jared were the two people responsible for our intramural ice hockey program, which is one of the department's most successful leagues.

Special Interest Instructor of the Year was awarded to Michelle Gould. Michelle was integral in the creation of our Feel the Beat dance classes that provided an opportunity for people with developmental disabilities to take part in recreation at Laurier.

Group Fitness Instructor of the Year was awarded to Carson Kolberg.  Carson has gone above and beyond his role as a cycle fit instructor this year and has been an outstanding leader amongst his team.

Golden Hawk Award of Excellence for Communications was awarded to Richelle Busby.  Richelle has been a valuable member of the communications team, allowing for all Golden Hawk fans to stay up to date.

Golden Hawk Award of Excellence for Events was awarded to Marta Kowalski.  Marta is extremely hard working during all our Athletic Events and she always did it with a smile on her face.  Her work ethic and positive attitude are a true bench mark to her entire team. Marta played an integral role as a volunteer during the CIS Women's Hockey Nationals in March.

Personal Training Trainer of the Year was awarded to Conor O'Flynn.  Conor has been a key figure amongst the Personal Trainer Team.  With Conor's dedication and passion for healthy living our Personal Trainers have seen their largest numbers to date. Conor was also integral in developing the layout for the Fitness Centre, was the women's basketball strength and conditioning coach for the 2010-2011 season where they finished fifth in Canada.

Athletic Complex Hawk Desk Staff Member of Year was awarded to Karli Campbell.  Karlie has been a Hawk Desk employee for four years and has been integral to the growth and development of our customer service initiatives at the Athletic Complex.  Karli has taken on numerous leadership roles over the past 4 years and has become a strong mentor to all staff.

University Stadium Hawk Desk Staff Member of the Year was awarded to Whitney Brennan.  Whitney has been a team leader since day one.  She is someone who possesses all the characteristics that make her a strong, essential team member.  The Stadium has seen record numbers in its open gym drop in this year and well as numerous community events in which Whitney has assisted in supervising.

Fitness Centre Attendant of the Year was awarded to James Hoefnagels.  James has been a member of the team for the past year and has been involved in many of the positive changes that the Fitness Centre has undergone during that time.  He has become leader on staff, who always has new ideas and is always willing to put in the extra effort necessary to provide the best experience for all users.

Aquatics Employee of the Year was awarded to Tara Ostrosser.  Tara has played a vital role on the Aquatics Team.  She is always willing to pick up shifts and work our major aquatic events.  The pool has seen an increase in usage this past and it is people like Tara who have made this possible.

Climbing Wall Employee of the Year was awarded to Sean Gallagher.  Sean was always willing to work at wall, whether it was for birthday parties or to teach someone who has never climbed before.  He has assisted with helping form a close knit team at the Climbing Wall.

The Department also presented two achievement awards to Amy Hucal for her dedication towards the Pool Renovation and to Matthew Rice for his dedication towards the future expansion of the Fitness Centre.

The Department of Athletics & Recreation would like to congratulate all our Students on a successful year.  To all those graduating this year, we wish you luck in all your endeavours.  We are looking forward to another successful year in 2011-2012.

The Department would also like to wish all Laurier Students the best of luck on their upcoming exams and also wish everyone a safe, healthy and happy summer.
