Harrison and Pedron earn President's Award
WATERLOO, Ont. - On Monday evening, Wilfrid Laurier University's Department of Athletics and Recreation hosted its annual athletic banquet recognizing the achievements of its coaches, players and staff at the Wilfrid Laurier Athletic Complex. 22 Rookies and MVPs were recognized for their performance on their respective teams. The department also awarded its twelve major awards to acknowledge contributors and outstanding athletes at Laurier. The major award winners are as follows:

The President's Award is for the most outstanding athletic performance from a male and female over the past year.  This year's recipients are Kale Harrison and Tania Pedron. Pedron, a fourth year business student from Maple, Ont. was named a first-team all-Canadian - and was the OUA West most valuable player in women's soccer. She helped lead her team to an OUA championship and the CIS final where she was named a CIS tournament all-star. Harrison is a fourth year business student from Stratford, Ont. Named a second team all-Canadian, Harrison was also a OUA first team all-star. He became Laurier's career scoring leader in men's basketball this season with 1,516 points. The two winners move on to represent Laurier as nominees for Ontario University Athletics' players of the year.

The Rich Newbrough Rookie of the Year Award is for the most outstanding athletic performance from a male and female rookie over the past year.  Kelsey Tikka from the women's soccer team and on the men's side Patrick Donnelly from the basketball team were the winners. Tikka, a biology student hailing from Thunder Bay, Ont., was named an OUA second team all-star and the OUA West rookie of the year. She also was named the CIS rookie of the year and CIS tournament most valuable player. Donnelly, from Oakville, Ont. was named the OUA West rookie of the year and the OUA West all-rookie team. He finished second on the team in rebounding with 168 boards and third in scoring with 270 points.

Luke Fusco Academic Athletic Achievement Award honours the male and female athlete who best combines academic and athletic achievement.  This year's recipients are Dillon Heap and Brittany Shaw. Heap is a member of the Golden Hawk football team and posted a 10.14 GPA (out of 12) as a Business major.  On the field, he was named an OUA first and second team all-star as well as an ESPN academic all-American and one of the CIS Top 8 academic all-Canadians. He is from Waterloo, Ont. Shaw, a fourth year swimmer, has a 10.68 GPA and posted a perfect 12 in the fall term. More recently, this Kitchener, Ont. qualified for the national championship for a second straight year and received the 2011 Outstanding Women of Laurier Award.

Fred Nichols Community Service Leadership Award recognizes the male and female student-athlete or student-leader who gives back to our community though volunteer commitments and/or fundraising efforts. The recipients of this award are Marco Bertagnolio, a student leadership ambassador and Megan Gilmore from the women's volleyball team. Gilmore, a Cambridge native, volunteers at the E.C. Drury School for the Deaf in Milton. She also volunteers at local schools to provide support for teachers. On the men's side, Bertagnolio, a member of the rugby team, provides direction to other Laurier students as a Student Leadership Centre Ambassador. He also assists them with their Co-Curricular records.

The Marty Wamsley Junior Trainer of the Year Award is given to the student trainer whose performance of duties is deemed most valuable to Laurier Athletics.  This year the award recipient is third year kinesiology major Kelsey Marshall. She has worked with the women's basketball program for the last two years. This student trainer has shown great dedication and enthusiasm is assisting athletes and ensuring that they are ready for competition.

Earle C. Shelley Unsung Hero Award goes to a person within the Wilfrid Laurier Community who unselfishly gives much time and effort into the overall success of the athletics program.  This year's recipient is CHAD LEITCH. He has built Laurier's video highlight packages from the ground up and develops all the graphics for them. He also shoots and voices the videos for the department

Tuffy Knight Award pays recognition to a person not affiliated with the university, for their untiring efforts over an extended period of time.  This year's recipient is Jim Uhrig. He is a tireless supported of the curling program as the manager of the KW Granite Club. He keeps the membership informed on the progress of the Golden Hawks and organizes receptions when they return from competitions.

Chuck Classen Award of Excellence for Team Managers goes to a student leader who helps to make a lasting contribution to the varsity athletics program as a team manager. This year's award recipient is Julie Gatis from the men's basketball program. She has taken care of the team's statistical and video requirements for the past two seasons.

Dean E. Brandon Award is awarded to the female contributing most to Athletics. This year's recipient Renata Adamczyk. As a senior academic mentor she has provided countless students with support while balancing her schooling as well as work at the Hawk Desk and being co-captain of the women's basketball team.

Bill Haggstrom Trophy is awarded to the male contributing most to Athletics. This year's award winner is Matthew Rice. This prestigious award goes to an individual who has taken his fondness of sports to a new level.  Early in the season he assisted the women's basketball program with their strength and conditioning while later in the year he helped lead the campaign for the fitness centre expansion.

Glenn Carroll Team of the Year Award is presented to the women's curling team. They claimed an OUA championship with a perfect 10 straight wins. At the CIS tournament they claimed Laurier's third women's curling title in four years.
