WATERLOO, Ont. - Laurier captain Jean-Michel Rizk of Dunham, Que. led his team by scoring the game winning goal to edge past the Ridgebacks 2-1. The Golden Hawks win the series 2-1.

After being outshot in the first two games of the series, Laurier started off strong in the first outshooting the Ridgebacks 12-6.

"It was by far our best effort," said Laurier head coach GREG PUHALSKI, "We were using our energy and we generated more offence."

It was a short-handed goal where the Hawks took the lead. Six-foot-two forward Collin Williams (Orangeville, Ont.) scored his first of the playoffs after putting up 15 points in 28 regular season games.

The Ridgebacks corrected their power play in the second as Derrick Bagshaw (Oshawa, Ont.) netted his first of the playoffs at 4:30. It would be the lone goal past Ryan Daniels (Pickering, Ont.) on the night who made 23 saves on 24 shots.

GREG PUHALSKI commented after the game on his netminder, "He was solid for us and made key saves. He played great for us all series. Only letting in one goal in the three [regulation] games is all you can ask for."

Minutes after the goal, Markham, Ont. native Matthew Reid slid the puck out from behind the Ridgebacks net to set up Jean-Michel Rizk beating Jason Guy (Whitby, Ont.) high blocker side. The goal would be the eventual game-winner.

After shooting eleven shots on goal in the first two periods, UOIT would pepper Ryan Daniels with thirteen shots in the final frame. After making 35 saves on 37 shots, the Ridgebacks would pull Jason Guy with a minute and a half remaining. UOIT could not send this game into overtime like the previous two games of the series and lost 2-1.

With the win, the Golden Hawks advance to the quarter-finals against Guelph. The first game of the best of three series will be on Thursday, February 24 at 7:30 p.m.
