Laurier: 5 UOIT: 1
WATERLOO, Ont. - The UOIT Ridgebacks had no answer as the Lady Hawks scored three unanswered goals in the third period, two coming from too-many-men penalties. They improve to 16-1-1 while the Ridgebacks fall to 5-10-2.
The Hawks Heather Fortuna
(Kitchener, Ont.) scored the game's first goal as she made a nifty deke on Jessica Larabie (Pickering, Ont.). The Ridgebacks Jill Morillo (Whitby,Ont.) tied up the game at the end of the period with a wrist shot past Liz Knox
(Stouffville, Ont.). Knox finished the night making 17 saves on 18 shots.
In the second, the Lady Hawks connected for a 2-1 lead. Laura Brooker
(Fergus, Ont.) went tape-to-tape with Katherine Shirriff
(Carrying Place, Ont.) who went wide right around the Ridgeback defenseman, and passed it across the ice to Caitlin Muirhead
(Waterloo, Ont.) who made no mistake for her fourth of the year. Jessica Larabie made two great saves, one after the other with five minutes left in the second to keep her team in the game.
Two too-many-men penalties were costly for the Ridgebacks as the Hawks capitalized on both opportunities. The third period saw goals from Blair Connelly
(Amherstburg, Ont.), Fiona Lester
(Peterborough, Ont.), and Alicia Martin
(Etobicoke, Ont.). The goal is Martin’s first on the season, she finished the night with a goal and an assist.
Head coach RICK OSBORNE
commented on the importance of beating the Ridgebacks to the puck, "Winning the battles is our trademark. You win them with extra time in the gym, on ice and in practice. We have Jamie Carlson
our performance manager to thank."
The Lady Hawks next game is at home on Sunday, January 9 against Queen’s.
