WATERLOO, Ont. - Wilfrid Laurier grabbed the lead in the first quarter and never looked back, beating the Cape Breton Capers 69-59.

The Golden Hawks were able to force turnovers and relied on Renata Adamczyk (Greensville, Ont.) and Megan Grant (Thunder Bay, Ont.) for their scoring. Grant dropped a game-high 24 points and Adamczyck scored 21 to lead the Hawks to their fifth straight win of the preseason.

Cape Breton was able to leap out to an early lead by as many as seven, but the Hawks were able to take over with three minutes left in the first quarter. Laurier led by ten going into half. In the second half the Capers cut the home team's advantage down to as little as one basket, but never regained the lead.

Laurier was led by two Hawks; Renata Adamczyk who had 21 points while Megan Grant led all scorers with 24 points. Christa Mancino (Port Colborne, Ont.) had eight points and led all players with nine rebounds. Bree Chaput (Guelph, Ont.) had nine points and had one of the team's two three-pointers.

The Capers were led by Jahlica Kirnon (Toronto, Ont.) who had 16 points to go along with five rebounds. Kayla McCarron and Stephanie Toxopeus (Kanata, Ont.) both added 10 points. Luciann Lahey (Catalone, N.S.) had eight points from off the bench.

The Hawks begin their regular season next Friday at 6 p.m., on the road at Queen's.
