WATERLOO, Ont.- The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks defeated the Oakville Royals U-18 team by a score of 18-11 in their final preseason exhibition game on Wednesday evening at Bechtel Park.
Standing out offensively was left fielder Daniel Murphy (Toronto) who went 3-4 with a walk, and earned five RBIs, three runs and a stolen base.
On the mound, pitcher WESLEY VAN LUVEN (Orillia, Ont.) dominated the Royals with a total of seven strikeouts over 10 batters faced.
The win gives the Hawks a 5-1 preseason record going in to their home opener on Saturday versus the Toronto Varsity Blues.
In the 2009 season the Blues finished with a 9-9 season record, compared to the Hawks 10-8 record. The Blues tied the Brock Badgers in standings, but earned a playoff berth as a result of their head-to-head record.
They went on to lose two straight to the eventual OUA champion Western Mustangs in their best of three semifinal series.
The Hawks defeated the McMaster Maurauders in two straight in their semifinal bouts enroute to the OUA final, eventually surrendering to the Mustangs.
The Varsity Blues graduated one of their best assets in pitcher Jake Gallo who threw a complete game no-hitter against the Hawks in 2009, one walk shy of a perfect game.
Gallo will join the Blues' coaching staff as a guest instructor under newcomer head coach Charles Pascal.
The 2009 Varsity Blues roster also held OUA most valuable pitcher Tyler Wilson and OUA all-star short stop David Fallico - both third year students; and fourth year OUA all-star third baseman Chris Dahiroc, and outfielders Pat Janssen and Jamie Lekas - all with eligibility to return.
The Hawks host their season opener at Bechtel Park on Saturday in a double header. Games are at 1 p.m. and 4 pm.
