Laurier Baseball try outs underway
WATERLOO, Ont.- The Laurier Baseball coaching staff has seen its largest group of players at this year’s try outs, examining over 50 incoming and returning students.

Sunday, August 29 was day three out on the field, and the Purple vs Gold intersquad game served as a great opportunity to take a look at the talent the 2010 team has to offer.

Look for big things to come from outfielder Nathan Loehle. He has been molding well into the center field position as a lead off batter - hoping to fill the shoes of departed OUA all-star Elliot Shrive. The 5-11, 180 lb Cambridge native clocked the fastest sprint times earlier in the weekend and despite getting hit by pitch twice in today’s game, also earned a single. Nathan played for the K-W JR Panthers of the Junior Intercounty Baseball League this summer and won the JICBL pennant and championship.

Other members of the highly skilled squad include: head coach SCOTT BALLANTYNE, assistant coach Mike Mulder, RHP David Canavan, RHP Stephen Zagrodny, and RHP Tyler Soucie. Third year outfielder and key player James Bruce also played for the Kitchener Panthers organization in the Intercounty League this summer.

Middle infielder, Matt Sacheli – playing second base today, went one for three with a walk. The former Ottawa Gee Gees captain and MVP brings experience and leadership to a team losing a significant number of its veteran players.

Catcher Andrew Czuchnicki made a lasting impression his first day out with the team. The Brampton native played great defence behind the plate, and settled for a walk, hit by pitch, and line out at bat.

On the mound each pitcher had a chance to pitch one inning worth of work. Right-hander Ian Filion of the Whitby Junior Chiefs faced five batters with no hits against him and racked up two strike outs.

Also hailing from Whitby is LHP Brett vanPelt. Brett is coming off of an NCAA D1 scholarship due to injury. Once healed, he will play a huge role for the Golden Hawks.

Try-outs wrap up Monday and the team will begin practices the same week.
