WATERLOO, Ont. – Tuesday Morning Wilfrid Laurier University’s Department of Athletics and Recreation hosted its annual Recreation Student Leader & Student Staff Brunch, recognizing all their achievements over the past year. This past year was Athletics and Recreations most successful to date as it saw the largest registration for intramurals, the largest number of visitors each week in all our facilities, the largest number of people per day using the fitness centre and the busiest open recreation gym time for students. It was with the hard work and dedication of all our student staff that this is made possible. Our student staff spent countless hours working towards every service that is provided to allow for the most positive experience for all participants. Students also had the opportunity to listen to speeches made by David McMurray, Assistant Vice President of Student Services and Dean of Students as well as Pater Baxter, Director of Athletics an Recreation.
The department also awarded fourteen awards which acknowledged outstanding student leadership and contribution at Laurier. The award winners were as follows:The Don Smith Award
is for the student who has made a lasting contribution to Athletics & Recreation at Laurier. This year’s recipient was Mary-Grace Falvo
. Mary-Grace had worked in numerous roles during her four years in the department, including lifeguarding, Aquatics Coordinator, Multi Sport Camp Coordinator and Recreation Assistant.Outstanding Customer Service Award
is for the student who portrays outstanding customer service to all visitors to our facilities. This year’s recipient was Allison Monteiro
. Allison has worked the past three years in the department, including roles in the Fitness Centre and two years as our Student Hawk Desk Coordinator. Earlier in March, Allison was also the recipient of an outstanding Student Leadership Award presented by the Student Leadership Centre at Laurier.Intramurals Referee of the Year
was awarded to Wesley Van Luven
. Wesley will also be assuming the Student Leader Role as the Residence Athletic Council Referee in Chief and First Liaison on 2010-2011.Referee in Chief of the Year
was awarded to Sarah Kerr
. Sarah was one of two people responsible for our intramural volleyball program, where over the past years has seen its participant numbers grow tremendously.Special Interest Instructor of the Year
was awarded to Jennah Popowycz
. Jennah has been an integral member of the Special Interest Team, always willing to teach classes and provide new and inspiring ideas. Jennah also assisted our Athletic Director, PETER BAXTER
in his victory as this year’s Dancing with Stars Champion which took place on Sunday March 28th, 2010 at the Athletic Complex.Group Fitness Instructor of the Year
was awarded to Katy Cooper
. Katy has gone above and beyond her role this year and has been an outstanding leader amongst her team. She always has new ideas to make her classes unique and enjoyable for all her participants.Golden Hawk Award of Excellence for Communications
was awarded to Greg Simpson
. Greg has been integral in the development and implementation of our Healthy Hawk monthly updates, Golden Hawk Minute and countless video and website creation you will find at www.laurierathletics.com
Golden Hawk Award of Excellence for Events
was awarded to Corina Buligan
. Corina is extremely hard working during all our Athletic Events and she always did it with a smile on her face. Her work ethic and positive attitude are a true bench mark to her entire team.Personal Training Trainer of the Year
was awarded to Angie Mennen. Angie has been a key figure amongst the Personal Trainer Team. The team now consists of five personal trainers and one Nutrionist. With Angie’s dedication and passion for healthy living our Personal Trainers have seen their largest numbers to date.
Athletic Complex Hawk Desk Staff Member of Year
was awarded to Aimee Maggiacomo
and Amanda Frost
. Aimee and Amanda have been Hawk Desk employees for three years and have been integral to the growth and development of our customer service initiatives at the Athletic Complex. The two recipients have taken on numerous leadership roles over the past three years and have become strong mentors to all staff.University Stadium Hawk Desk Staff Member of the Year
was awarded to Patsy Joe. Patsy has been a team leader since day one. She is someone who possesses all the characteristics that make her a strong, essential team member. The Stadium has seen record numbers in its open gym drop in this year and well as numerous community events in which Pasty has assisted in supervising.
Fitness Centre Attendant of the Year
was awarded to Kayla Mick. Kayla has been a member of the team for three years and has been involved in many of the positive changes that the Fitness Centre has undergone during that time. She is a leader on staff, who always has new ideas and is always willing to put in the extra effort necessary to provide the best experience for all users.
Aquatics Employee of the Year
was awarded to Kathleen Matthews
. Kathleen has played a vital role in the opening of the newly renovated pool in November. She is always willing to pick up shifts and work our major aquatic events. The pool has seen an increase in usage since grand re-opening and it is people like Kathleen who has made this possible.
Climbing Wall Employee of the Year
was awarded to Erica Marshall. Eric was always willing to work at wall, whether it was for birthday parties or to teach someone who has never climbed before. She has assisted with helping form a close knit team at the Climbing Wall.
The Department of Athletics & Recreation would like to congratulate all our Students on a successful year. To all those graduating this year, we wish you luck in all your endeavours. We are looking forward to another successful year in 2010-2011.
