WATERLOO, Ont. - Megan Grant
(Thunder Bay, Ont.) had 15 points and 15 rebounds to pick up her second career double-double to lead the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks to a 63-55 win over the Brock Badgers.
was outstanding at both ends and was a big factor in the victory,” said head coach PAUL FALCO
following the game.
Laurier improves to 9-12 and holds sixth place in the OUA West. Brock falls to 12-9 and is tied for fourth place. The Hawks home record moves to 8-4 on the season.
In the first quarter Laurier broke out to an early lead on two jumpers by Megan Grant
and a three-pointer by graduating player Kandice Baptiste
(Shannonville, Ont.). The Hawks would maintain an advantage until midway through the frame when the Badgers would whittle the lead down to one. Laurier would get back out in front, but neither squad would hit a basket for the final two-and-a-half minutes of the quarter. The purple and gold held a 15-10 lead going into the second. Brock would get into shooting trouble in the second shooting only 11.8 percent in the half. By the break the Golden Hawks held an 18 point lead, 33-15.
Brock would battle back in the third outscoring the home team 19-14 to cut into their first half lead. The strong play of Hillary Woodside (Fall River, N.S.) and Whitney Gorges (Welland, Ont.) bit into the Hawks lead early in the frame, but some strong defence held the Badgers in check. Brock outscored Laurier 21-16 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to overcome their first half deficit.Megan Grant
and Mallory Kohlmeier
(Sarnia, Ont.) both had a game high of 15 points to lead the Hawks in scoring. Graduating player Christine MacDonald
(Brantford, Ont.) chipped in 11. Grant also hit a career high in rebounds with 15 to lead all players.
For the Badgers, Whitney Gorges led the way with 11 points, while Lauren Stewart (Hamilton, Ont.) was the squads leading rebounder with 10.
The Golden Hawks will conclude their regular season place on Saturday, February 20th at 2 p.m. when they take on the Waterloo Warriors in the PAC.
