WATERLOO, Ont. - Renata Adamczyk
(Greensville, Ont.) scored 29 points to lift the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks to a 80-69 win over the visiting McMaster Marauders.
The 29 points for the fourth year guard is career high, along with hitting 13 field goals. She is now 57 points away from hitting the 1,000 point mark in her time at Laurier.
“Renata showed tonight that she is one of the tougher defensive match-ups in the OUA, ” said head coach PAUL FALCO
. “Her ability to score inside and out, along with her athleticism makes it difficult for teams to shut her down.”
Both squad’s started off evenly until a couple of errors in the offensive zone put Laurier down by six midway through the second quarter. Adamczyk rallied her team and fought back to a tie before a late basket gave the Marauders a 38-37 lead at the break. The kinesiology major had 20 first half points.
In the third quarter, Laurier pulled away from the Marauders with a 26-17 point effort. A lot of the Hawks points came off of turnovers as they converted McMasters 20 into 27 points.
“Our strong offence came from our defensive effort tonight,” said Falco. “Key stops by the defence created a lot of offensive opportunities for our players.”
After the win Laurier moves to 6-7 on the season while McMaster falls to 8-5. The Hawks are now in sixth place in the OUA West, while the Marauders sit in third.
The purple and golds top scorers beyond Adamczyk were Christa Mancino
