Laurier earns 11 OUA all-star awards
Football team nets 11 OUA all-stars
HAMILTON, Ont. (OUA) - Ontario University Athletics released on Tuesday the 2009 edition of the football all-stars.

Ten different Golden Hawks earned the provincial awards including Dillon Heap (Waterloo, Ont.), Stephen Cormack (Waterloo, Ont.), Paul Hancock (Cochrane, Alta.), Giancarlo Rapanaro (Niagara Falls, Ont.), Jordan Van Horn (Burlington, Ont.), Taurean Allen (Etobicoke, Ont.) and Courtney Stephen (Brampton, Ont.) who were all named to the first team while Adam Bestard (Sarnia, Ont.), Mike Montoya (Burlington, Ont.) and Carlos Naranjo (Whitby, Ont.) were named to the second team.

Last season saw six team members honoured provincially and the previous year there was a total of nine. Laurier leads all Ontario schools this year with their 11 all-stars with Western just behind them with 10 and Queen’s with nine.

Laurier’s defence dominated the awards with seven while the offence picked up three and specials made up the remainder.

 On the defensive side Taurean Allen picked up his third all-star award. Allen, a 5-11 communications major had at corner, where he picked up 16.5 tackles, two knockdowns and one interception.  Linebacker Giancarlo Rapanaro picked up his second first team award after leading the team in sacks with 4.5 on the season. The kinesiology major also was third on the team in tackles with 37.5. Safety Courtney Stephen earned his first first team all-star award after leading the Hawks in tackles with 44.5 and was second on the squad in interceptions with two and knockdowns with five. Defensive lineman Stephen Cormack, was second on the Hawks in sacks with four on the season and also racked up 18.5 tackles. Fourth year lineman Paul Hancock earned his first all-star award with 24.5 tackles. Defensive back Jordan Van Horn led all Hawks with eight knockdowns during the season while also earning his first provincial award. Carlos Narajo, a second year arts major, had 9.5 tackles on the season and earned his first award.

For the offence, receiver Dillon Heap led the team with 592 yards on 28 receptions. He also picked up two touchdowns. Fifth year offensive lineman Adam Bestard started all eight games this season for a career total of 33 games played. Running back Mike Montoya led the purple and gold’s running game with 847 yards and six touchdowns.

Dillon Heap was also named to the first all-star team for specials teams after breaking the CIS record for punt return yardage in a season with 912 yards. The business major also set Laurier records kickoff returns in a season and kickoff return yardage in a season.

The Golden Hawks finished their regular season with a 6-2 record which left them in second place in the OUA with a first round bye. Laurier hosted Western in the semifinal and lost 26-16.
