KITCHENER - The Laurier Women's Fastpitch Club Team claimed the 2009 Canadian Intercollegiate Women's Fastpitch Championship this past weekend.
The Lady Hawks started the weekend off with an emotional affair with fellow unbeaten rival from Western on Saturday morning. The offence of both teams was stellar but the Stangs came out on top by a 7-6 final score for Laurier's first loss of the '09 season.
Laurier came back against St. Claire College Saturday afternoon with the offence once again flying in a 7-4 victory. The Hawks finished the round robin vs Calgary Dino's and mercied them with a 9-1 final. This gave Laurier a double life in the medal round and would face number one seeded Durham College. Durham kept the Laurier offence off guard but it couldn't be enough with Laurier hanging on for a 4-3 win over a pesky Lourdes Club who would not give up.
The final day of the tournament saw WLU and UWO facing on once again in another emotional affair. Laurier got their redemption in a 7-0 triumph. Kari Jansen hit a three-run home run to open it up for the Lady Hawks.
The gold medal affair was a repeat of the 2008 affair in Calgary vs University of Saskatchewan. The Huskies had an early 3-0 lead before Jansen once again was the hero with a three-run home run to tie the game in front of a packed crowd of Laurier fans who made it a noisy affair. The Hawks didn't finish there as they score 5 times in the 4th inning and added two more in the 6th to claim the gold medal in a 7-3 win. Cassie Taylor Baptiste threw the final three games for Laurier and shut down any possible come-backs from the opponents thanks in part to great calling behind the plate from catcher Amy Oliver. Center-fielder Jenna Campagnola and Kari Jansen were named All-Canadians for the tournament.
The Lady Hawks Fastpitch club captured their fourth medal in three years and will continue the regular season this weekend against McMaster and Brock at home as they hope to finish off a perfect regular season and grab another medal in the Ontario Championships in London in two weeks.
