Ikram & Sukkau lead Hawks in battle with UofW
The Setting

The Cross Country team reached the half way point of the 2009 season during Homecoming this weekend. With a storm on the horizon the University of Waterloo hosted the 2009 edition of the Don Mills Cross Country Open. The meet took place on the North Campus of the University of Waterloo at Columbia Lake.

Competition

The Don Mills Cross Country race is an open competition so that Universities, Colleges, Clubs and Alumni teams can compete head to head. It is also the site for the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University annual derby. Although these two teams compete against each other through out the season, this is the only race that is contested in Waterloo. Laurier has not had a victory at this meet since the women’s team back in 2004.

The Team

The women’s team finished fourth overall and was lead for the third time this season by Catherine Sukkau. Jennifer Laughton, Kristin Avery, Courtney Brohart and Keegan Castrillo completed the scoring for Laurier. All five runners were only separated by 56 seconds, which is an improvement over last week’s performance when the women were separated by over two minutes. This a good sign as the team moves closer to the championship side of the season.

The men’s team finished second overall narrowly missing out to the University of Toronto. The Hawks were lead by Shoaib Ikram for the second time this season followed closely by his twin brother Sohaib Ikram. The two brothers raced side by side and pushed each other throughout the competition. Matt Robertson, Brent Meidinger and Alex Garriock completed the scoring for Laurier. In the process the Laurier men were successful in defeating the University of Waterloo.

The next three weeks will be pivotal for both teams as they set their focus on the Brock Open and the OUA Championships.

The Coach’s thoughts

“This was the best team effort yet, for both the men and women. We are still looking for better things to come,” said head coach PETER GRINBERGS

The next one up

Both the men and women will return to action in three weeks time (10/24/2009) on the Campus of Brock University for the Brock Open cross country meet. Brock University will also provide the site for this year’s OUA Championships.
