The 2009 Wilfrid Laurier University cross country team is proud to introduce the following associate coaches. John Carson, Paul Zapletal, Sarah Alkin, Dana Fox, Darryl Blackport, Erin Fox, Ian Carswell, Leslie Carson and Krestena Sullivan. As the season unfolds each coach will bring experience, knowledge, enthusiasm and their own unique qualities.
John Carson graduated from the University of Waterloo and is a massage therapist practicing at Grand River Sports Medicine. John has competed at a national level, completed a 2:29 marathon and competed in the Hawaii Ironman.
Paul Zapletal is a massage therapist and acupuncturist working out of his clinic in Beechwood, Waterloo. He has worked with athletes in the CFL, NFL Weight Lifting and Pro Golfers.
Sarah Alkin graduated from the University of Louisville and is currently at Wilfrid Laurier University in the Bachelor of Education Program and is studying to be a teacher. Athletically, Sarah captained the University of Louisville Cross Country team within the NCAA, holds two school records and has competed at the Canadian National Championships.
Dana Fox graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University and is now the director of business for Athena Software. Last year Dana started teaching a course on business development at Laurier. Athletically, Dana has competed at the Boston Marathon and the Canadian National Championships.
Darryl Blackport is a graduate from Queens University. Athletically he has competed at the OUA and CIS championships for Queens University. Over the last 8 years Darryl has been coached by Grinbergs.
Erin Fox graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University and is currently at the University of Western Ontario working on a Masters in Educational Psychology with the plans of becoming a teacher. Athletically, Erin has competed for Laurier at the OUA and CIS championships.
Ian Carswell is a record holder and former captain of Harvard University's Cross-Country and Track & Field teams. Currently he teaches and coaches at St. John's Kilmarnock School in Breslau, Ontario. Athletically, Ian has represented Canada on multiple occasions including the World Cross Country Championships, Pan American Games and Commonwealth Games.
Leslie Carson graduated from Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax and holds an MBA from the University of Guelph. As a dietitian, Leslie has much food for thought! She has competed in over 20 Marathons throughout the world with a personal best of 2:43.
Krestena Sullivan was an eight-time All-American at Villanova University. She currently teaches and coaches at St Mary’s High School in Kitchener. Athletically, Krestena has represented Canada on multiple occasions including at the World Cross Country Championships.
Cross Country Head Coach PETER GRINBERGS
has worked with each of these individuals for many years. He believes that having “a great mix of people with a lot of running knowledge and experience will help the Laurier team develop and compete to their potential.” The qualities that the associate coaches bring with them will play a key role in Laurier’s development into a solid distance program.
