Women's Basketball announces recruits
WATERLOO, Ont. - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks and head coach PAUL FALCO are pleased to announce the commitment of four recruits for the 2009-2010 season. Anna Southall-Millward (Hamilton, Ont.), Alena Luciani (Oakville, Ont.), Nicole Roeder (Waterloo, Ont.), and Aimee Van Dam (Winnipeg, Man.) have all signed up to wear the purple and gold.

“We are fortunate to have added four players who are excellent students, promising CIS basketball players and who will all be positive contributors to both our team and the Laurier community,” said coach PAUL FALCO on the new additions.

Anna Southall-Millward, a 5-11 post player, joins the Golden Hawks after a very successful high school career at perennial powerhouse Westdale High. This past season Anna was a team captain and was instrumental in helping lead Westdale to the OFSAA ‘quad A’ semifinals as she was the team’s leading scorer at the tournament. She also recently won a provincial gold medal at the OBA championships as her club team Blessed Sacrament won the girls Division 1 final.

“Anna will have an immediate impact on our team,” said coach Falco. “She is a strong defender and rebounder, runs the floor well, and can score both inside and out. She has played in many high-level pressure packed games and this experience should help her with the transition to the CIS game.”

Alena Luciani
, a 5-11 wing player, recently graduated from Berkshire Prep School in Sheffield, Mass. where she was a tri-sport athlete playing basketball, soccer, and lacrosse. This past season Alena was captain and MVP of the Berkshire basketball team and she was also a stand-out in previous years at Holy Trinity in Oakville where she was named athlete of the year and a basketball MVP and all-star.

“Alena is an excellent athlete who will fit in well with our philosophy of playing an up-tempo brand of basketball here at Laurier," said coach Falco. "She has a great attitude and is eager to learn and develop her game.”

Luciani follows in the footsteps of her brothers, Dante & Vince, who also selected Laurier for their post-secondary education and played varsity sports as members of the football program.

Nicole Roeder, a 5-7 guard from nearby Waterloo Collegiate Institute joins the Golden Hawks from one of the most successful high school basketball programs in the province. Nicole captured an OFSAA ‘quad A’ bronze medal at WCI this past season, was voted as a first team league all-star and was also a member of the KW Lightning club team.

“Nicole is a product of the excellent teaching that Coach Ranton and Coach Nickel have provided for years now at WCI. She has a solid fundamental skill base and a good knowledge of the game,” said Falco.

Aimee Van Dam, a 6-1 post player spent this past year competing for Canadian Mennonite University in Winnipeg where she was selected to the MCAC all-conference team. Van Dam was also a member of the Team Manitoba U/15 provincial team.

“Aimee is someone who rebounds and runs the floor well while giving us some depth in the post position,” said coach Falco

Laurier finished fourth in league play last season, hosting and winning their first round playoff game against Lakehead before bowing out to Windsor in the OUA west semifinal. The Golden Hawks will kick off their 2009-2010 campaign on August 29th when they host the University of Vermont at 1:00 p.m. at the Athletic Complex.
