Laurier: 2 York: 3
TORONTO, Ont. - The no. 9 York Lions (15-11-0) ended the no. 2 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (26-1-0) 26 game winning streak at Canlan Ice rink with a 3-2 win over the visitors.
"You really have to give York credit, they beat us at our own game," commented head coach RICK OSBORNE
after the game. "They scored two power play goals and played tough defence throughout the game."
The Golden Hawks opened the scoring in the game with Candace Kellough
(Bolton, Ont.) beating Megan Slumskie (Baden, Ont.) for her eighth of the season. York would get on the scoreboard in the first as well with a two-on-one goal from Lindsay Agnew (Kenora, Ont.).
All tied up in to start the second, the Lions would get the go-ahead goal from Autumn Mills (Thornhill, Ont.). With Lauren Barch
(Burlington, Ont.) in the box for hooking, the Laurier penalty kill couldn't clear the puck and Mills gave her team the lead.
Laurier started off the third period by tying the game up. Just 22 seconds in the Hawks attacked the net and caught Slumskie out of position. Kaley Powers
(Kingston, Ont.) netted the goal with a backhander into the empty net. York continued to get chances forcing Kate Psota
(Burlington, Ont.) to draw an interference penalty. On the ensuing power-play the Lions capitalized, catching Liz Knox
(Stouffville, Ont.) going the wrong way, Mandy Cole (North York, Ont.) scored what would be the game winner.
The Golden Hawks' Liz Knox
faced 23 shots, stopping 20 of them for the loss, Megan Slumskie saw 26 and stopped 24 for the win.
York went two for three with the man-advantage, while Laurier was unable to capitalize on their single opportunity.
Laurier has now finished in first place in the OUA and will now await the winner of the first round of the OUA quarter-finals.
