WATERLOO, Ont. – Renata Adamczyk (Dundas, Ont.) scored 24 points to lead the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (11-11) over the Lakehead Thunderwolves (11-11) 62-58 in the first round of the OUA playoffs. Laurier will now go on to face the Windsor Lancers in the OUA quarter-finals.

"In a tight playoff playoff game our determination and heart made the difference down the stretch," commented head coach PAUL FALCO after his first playoff win.

With the Thunderwolves looking for their first win in the month of February, the visitors came out of the gate swinging. They built a small lead in the first quarter and limited the Golden Hawks chances. Laurier would cut into Lakehead’s lead late in the frame, whittling down an eight point lead to just three.  The second quarter saw both teams play some strong defence, however the Golden Hawks would capitalize on the Wolves turnovers to earn a nine point lead. The score at the half was 33-24. Renata Adamczyk had ten points for the Hawks at the half, while Georgia Harvey (Winnipeg, Man.) was the leader for the Thunderwolves with eight.

Lakehead’s Sarah Gordon (Halifax, N.S.) took the game into her own hands in the third quarter, single handedly erasing her team’s deficit with ten points in the frame. By the end of the quarter the visitors would hold a three point lead. The Wolves would continue to build on their momentum early in the final quarter building up a nine point lead, before the Golden Hawks Renata Adamczyk would lead the charge to tie up the game. Aleksa Brkic (Mississauga, Ont.) hit a jump shot in the final minute and then sank two free throws to earn the win for the purple and gold.

Renata Adamczyk led all scorers with 24 points, 14 of those in the second half and led the team in rebounding with 8. Laura Pacevicius (Acton, Ont.) scored 11 in the Hawks first playoff win since February 18th, 2006 against Brock.

For the visitors, Kathryn Verboom (Thunder Bay, Ont.) led the way with 13 points followed by Sarah Gordon with 12 and Georgia Harvey with ten. Top rebounder for Lakehead was Sarah Gordon who also picked up a double-double in the loss.

The Golden Hawks will now advance to the OUA quarter-finals to take on the Windsor Lancers in Windsor on Saturday, February 21st.  The match will be played in the St. Denis Centre and will start at 4:00 p.m.
