(Dundas, Ont.) scored 20 points as the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (8-8) defeated the Western Mustangs (11-5) 69-57. At no time during the game did the Mustangs hold a lead over Laurier.
“Our defensive intensity and our rebounding were key, ” commended head coach PAUL FALCO
after the game. “We took them away from their game and denied them the easy looks that they had the first time we played them.”
The Golden Hawks jumped out to an early six point lead in the first minute of the game and maintained that lead throughout the first half. At the end of the first quarter Laurier held a five point lead and extended that in the second to eleven points on two straight baskets just before the break. Renata Adamczyk
led the team with 14 points.
The Mustangs roared back in the third quarter, outscoring the home team 21-16, but the Golden Hawks still held the lead going into the final frame. Laurier played a strong defensive system that stopped Western cold on several occasions and allowed the purple and gold to score some quick three pointers to extend the lead. Although the Hawks didn’t score a basket in the final four minutes of the game, they were good on 81% of their free throws to keep the Mustangs in check.Renata Adamczyk

(Mississauga, Ont.) scored 17 for the team, while Amber Hillis
(Hamilton, Ont.) scored 11. Laurier’s top rebounder was Laura Pacevicius
(Acton, Ont.) with eight.
For the Mustangs, Bess Lennox (Ottawa, Ont.) scored a game-high 21 points and led the team in rebounding with six. Amanda Anderson (Chatham, Ont.) put down 14 and Megan Lapointe (Burlington, Ont.) scored 10.
The Golden Hawks are next in action on Friday, January 30th when they travel up to Thunder Bay to take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves. Tip-off is at 6:00 p.m.
