LANGLEY, B.C. - The Wilfrid Laurier
Golden Hawks women's soccer team ended their season on a high note by
defeating the Ottawa Gee Gee's 1-0 in the CIS consolation final. The
win brings their record at the national tournament to 2-1 and gives
them a fifth place finish.
Laurier previously beat the Gee Gees 1-0 in penalty kicks to claim the OUA championship last Sunday.
“The first half was a bit of a war for both teams and it went back in forth.” said head coach BARRY MACLEAN. “The second half I think we clearly took the game to them.”
The game was the first match the Hawks had played in the tournament in which there wasn't constant rain. Laurier started off slowly in the first with both teams trading scoring opportunities. At the half the game was scoreless.
The second frame saw the Hawks up their pace of play. In the 56th minute Laurier earned a corner kick which was initially cleared, but then sent back in by Erica Horner (Kitchener, Ont.) who found the back of the net. The goal would stand up as the game winner.
“It's a good way to end the season,” commented team co-captain Sara Hopper (Thornhill, Ont.). “We wish we could have finished higher, but it is incredible to be here.”
Late in the game Mal Woeller (Kiburn, Ont.) stopped a break away attempt by the Gee Gee's with a sliding grab at the edge of her crease. The Hawk goalie faced six shots in the win.
“Real character is shown in these kind of games when no one is watching. They have shown that they have that.” said Maclean.
The Golden Hawks finished the regular
season with a 8-1-5 record during the regular season and advanced to
the OUA playoffs where they claimed the team's first Ontario
championship since 1995. The team finished the post season with a 6-1
