Hawks Earn Two Major Awards and Two All-Stars

HAMILTON, Ont. – Ontario University Athletics (OUA) is pleased to announce the 2008 men’s soccer major award winners and All-Stars. Laurier picks up two first team all-stars as well as two major awards. Matthew Smith and Alex Doma were named to the first team while Imran Ahmed picked up the community service award and MARIO HALAPIR won the Coach of the Year award.

Laurier’s Imran Ahmed (Windsor, Ont.) receives the West Community Service Award. Ahmed is an instructor at Elite Athletes International, a soccer academy in Waterloo region that develops players aged six to 16 in the sport. Ahmed is also the president of both the Lettermen Club and the Italian Club at Wilfrid Laurier University.

Head coach MARIO HALAPIR picked up the coach of the year award after his first full season as the head coach for the men’s soccer team. Halapir has been the associate coach for both soccer teams since 1999. Mario led the team to a 7-3-4 record which was good for second on the OUA West.

Matthew Smith (Oakville, Ont.) has been the backbone of the Golden Hawks this year. He has played every minute of every game and has been extremely reliable playing as sweeper. He is tough to beat in one-on-one situations and has solid technical skills. He scored three goals this season.

Alex Doma (Burlington, Ont.) is a co-captain of the team and has proven his leadership both on and off the field of play. He is a team player and uses his endurance and agility to make him a tough player to play against. This midfielder has scored one goal for the Hawks this season.

Laurier defeated the Western Mustangs in penalty kicks 4-3 to advance to the OUA final four at York. Their first game will be against the #1 nationally ranked Carleton Ravens at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 1st. The winner of the match will advance to the OUA championship game.
