Laurier: 3 OUA Playoffs - Waterloo: 1
– Jennifer Fewster-Yan
(Scarborough, Ont.) scored two goals, including the game
winner, as the Wilfrid Laurier women’s soccer team defeated their cross town rival
University of Waterloo Warriors 3-1 at Alumni Field. The Golden Hawks will now
advance to the OUA quarter-finals against McMaster.
Laurier’s Ali McKee
(Bracebridge, Ont.) opened the scoring for the Golden Hawks
early in the first half. The goal opened
up the game as Waterloo was playing defensively. The Warriors got their chance
when Tara Chadwick (Stratford, Ont.) got the ball down the sideline and went to
the net. She scored just midway through the first half to tie the game. Laurier continued to carry the play and spend
most of the time inside the Warriors zone. The match was tied until midway
through the second when Jen Fewster-Yan headed a cross past Catherine
Vanderburgh (Waterloo, Ont.) and into the back of the net. Fewster-Yan scored another goal later on in the
second to seal the victory for the Hawks.
“It was a dominating performance and a deserving win,“ said head coach BARRY MACLEAN
. “Jen did very well for us.”
The Golden Hawks outshot the visiting Warriors ten to three with Vanderburgh
making eight saves in the loss and Mal Woeller (Kinburn, Ont.) saving two
for the win.
Laurier will now travel to Ron Joyce Stadium on Saturday, October 25 to take on
the McMaster Marauders at 1:15 p.m.
