CIS Announces East-West Bowl Rosters

OTTAWA (CIS) - Canadian Interuniversity Sport announced Thursday the list of 91 football players who will participate in the sixth annual East West Bowl on May 10, 2008 at McMaster University's new Ronald V. Joyce Stadium, in Hamilton.

Four Golden Hawks will compete in the event including quarterback Ian Noble (West Vancouver, BC), running back Peter Quinney (Belleville, Ont.), offensive lineman Adam Bestard (Sarnia, Ont.) and defensive lineman Kyle Ardill (Mississauga, Ont.).

McMaster is hosting the event for the first time, taking over from Laval (2007, 2006) and Wilfrid Laurier (2005, 2004, 2003). A year ago in Quebec City, the West team claimed its fifth win in as many tries, prevailing 22-19 in overtime in front of 8,058 fans at PEPS Stadium.

Official website:

"We are looking forward to hosting the CIS student-athletes and coaches," said McMaster Director of Athletics & Recreation, Therese Quigley. "The East West bowl has developed into an outstanding event and we are delighted to bring it to our community."

The East West Bowl showcases CIS players who will be eligible for the 2009 Canadian Football League draft. Thirty-six of the 54 players invited to this year's CFL evaluation camp were former East West Bowl participants.

The East squad is comprised of student-athletes representing institutions from the Atlantic and Quebec conferences in addition to Ottawa, Queen's, York and Toronto, while the West squad is made up of players from universities west of the GTA. Each school is represented by a minimum of three and a maximum of four players.

University of Manitoba head coach Brian Dobie, who last fall led his Bisons to a perfect 12-0 season and the third Vanier Cup title in school history, will be at the helm of the West squad. The East contingent will be led by Saint Mary's sideline boss Steve Sumarah, who guided his Huskies to the CIS final in 2007 in only his second campaign at the controls.

Leading up the all-CIS selection are five 2007 all-Canadians including Bishop's running back Jamall Lee of Port Coquitlam, B.C., Montreal defensive end Martin Gagné of Laval, Que., Mount Allison returner and receiver Gary Ross of Windsor, Ont., Queen's defensive end Osinachi Ukwuoma of Mississauga, Ont., and Acadia free safety Elliott Richardson of Toronto. All five will suit up for the East.

Lee was the Quebec conference Hec Crighton Trophy nominee as CIS player of the year last fall. In his third season at Bishop's, the son of former CFL rookie of the year and first overall draft pick Orville Lee set a QUFL single-season record with 1464 rushing yards, the fifth best tally in CIS history.

Gagné was named CIS rookie of the year in 2005 and was the Quebec nominee for the J.P. Metras Trophy as CIS outstanding down lineman the past two seasons.

The trio of Laval's Benoit Groulx of Montreal, Queen's Danny Brannagan of Burlington, Ont., and Mount Allison's Kelly Hughes of Brampton, Ont., will try to quarterback the East to a first victory, while Western Ontario's MICHAEL FAULDS of Eden Mills, Ont., Wilfrid Laurier's Ian Noble of West Vancouver, B.C., and Guelph's Justin Dunk of Guelph, Ont., will handle the snaps for the West.

Faulds and Dunk both return for the second straight year.

Host McMaster will be represented by receivers Matt Giordano of Hamilton and Andrew Ross of Burlington, Ont., and defensive lineman James Edwards of Hamilton.

Kickoff for the 2008 East West Bowl game is set for 4 p.m. Eastern on Saturday, May 10. The first practices are scheduled for Tuesday, May 6, while the East West Bowl banquet will take place at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 8.

Tickets for the game will be available beginning on April 28th. All details available at
