OTTAWA (CIS) – Canadian Interuniversity Sport announced this year’s 2007-08
women’s hockey All-Canadians. The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks picked up two
awards, one on the first team and one on the second team.
Laurier’s Andrea Bevan was named to the first All-Canadian team while OUA Player of the Year Lauren Barch was named to the second All-Canadian team.
“Having two athletes recognized nationally is a real honour for the Golden Hawk hockey program.” Commented head coach RICK OSBORNE. “ The pair are great examples of what our program stands for and this helps to motivate us for the days to come.”
Assistant Captain Andrea Bevan, who received her second first team All-Canadian award in as many years, has been a leader on the Golden Hawks women’s hockey squad all season. The Collingwood natives’ leadership, combined with her drive and determination, has propelled her game to the next level. Most recently selected as one of two CIS players to the Canadian women’s Under-22 team, Andrea has made the most of her opportunities at every level of competition.
Burlington resident, Lauren Barch picked up her first
national award by being named to the second All-Canadian team. The third year
psychology major led the Golden Hawks in scoring with 31 points in 27 games.
Most recently named an OUA first team all-star, Barch assisted on both game
winning goals in the OUA Championship series.
The Golden Hawk women’s hockey team defeated the Queen’s Golden Gaels and Toronto Varisty Blues to claim their fifth consecutive OUA banner and advance to the national tournament. Laurier will face off against the University of Alberta Panadas and the University of Ottawa Gee Gee’s in pool play.
Wilfrid Laurier University’s Department of Athletics & Recreation is home to 23 varsity sports as well as numerous intramural, recreation & fitness programs. Laurier’s varsity teams have brought home 50 provincial championships as well as eight national championships in 97 years of competition.
