WATERLOO – Andrea Ironside (Collingwood, Ont.) netted the game winning goal two-minutes and sixteen seconds into overtime as the #3 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks defeated the #6 Toronto Varsity Blues 2-1 in the first game of the best-of-three Championship series.

Ironside netted her second of the playoffs beating Toronto’s Stephanie Lockert, a first team OUA all-star. Lockert was faced with 34 shots in the contest.

“[Lauren] Barch (Burlington, Ont.) clogged up in front of the net after a shot by Kate Psota (Burlington, Ont.) and then I put it in,” commented Ironside, a third year forward on the game winner.

The loss for Toronto was the first of the season for them after they had led a contest after two periods of play. They had held a 15-0-1 record in the situation through the season. Laurier picked up their first win of the year after trailing after two periods.

Earlier in the contest, Toronto’s Brenley Jorgenson opened scoring for the blue-and-white in the second period beating Hawk netminder Liz Knox. The puck floated over her glove hand as one of the eventual 24 shots on net to put the Varsity Blues ahead. Earlier in the contest Knox stopped a two-on-one and made some key saves to keep the Hawks in the contest.

“Both Lockert and Knox are outstanding goalies,” said Laurier head coach RICK OSBORNE. “We knew this series was going to be a bit of a goalies duel.”

Rookie Kaley Powers (Kingston, Ont.), one of six first years on the team, netted the equalizer late into the third period as her tenth of the year to force overtime.

Through the regular season the Golden Hawks held a 2-0-1 record against the Varsity Blues with the most recent competition coming on February 9th as a tie at twos.

The gold-medal series continues on Friday, February 29th at 7:30 p.m. at Varsity Arena in Toronto with a potential game three back at the Waterloo Recreation Complex for Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
