WATERLOO – Wilfrid Laurier University honoured the 2006/07 edition of the Academic All-Stars and All-Canadians yesterday at a recognition luncheon.
The second annual event was the recognized 41 individuals amongst 524 Wilfrid Laurier student-athletes in 23 inter-university programs. There are a total of 11 athletes who were recognized in OUA or provincial level sports and an additional 30 in CIS or national level sports.
To qualify for either of the awards, students must maintain an average of 80% (10-out-of-12 grade point average at Laurier), and attend the university as a full-time student and participate as an eligible athlete in an interuniversity sport for an academic season.
“Laurier takes great pride in its tradition of excellence in academics and athletics,” stated Director of Athletics and Recreation PETER BAXTER. “Their achievement reflects the support system of student athlete development that we have created to ensure excellence in the classroom by our student athletes.”
This year marked the first year of the partnership known as the ‘Athlete Academic Success Program’ between Athletics and Recreation and Learning Services. The Athlete Academic Success Program (AASP) is delivered through scheduled workshops, one-to-one assistance sessions and intense study sessions. The program is facilitated by the Athlete Academic Mentors, who are trained senior student athletes that have excellent learning skills, strategies, study habits and are capable of assisting other student athletes who need to improve their existing learning and studying skills and strategies.
Kinesiology professor Stephen Wenn spoke to the group of athletes, deans and supporters of the Golden Hawk program at the luncheon recognizing the dedication and strive for excellence that the student-athletes have in representing their school in competition while attaining a university degree.
