Bevan named to under-22 team

CALGARY (Hockey Canada) – Hockey Canada announced today the 22 members of the Canadian National Women’s Under-22 team at the European Air Canada Cup, January 2nd to 6th in Ravensburg, Germany.

On the team is Wilfrid Laurier’s fourth-year assistant captain Andrea Bevan (Collingwood, Ont.). Bevan is one of two Canadian Interuniversity Sport athletes named to the team. Both members of the defence, Bevan and McGill’s Catherine Ward will travel to Germany along with York Coach Dan Church who will be the head coach of the team.

Bevan, both a school rookie of the year (2004/05) and most valuable player (2006/07) has been a significant force for the purple-and-gold helping them to capture three of the past four consecutive provincial championships and attend the national championships all of those years.

“It’s been an honour to be named to be a part of the program,” commented the 5’4” defenseman. “It’s a great opportunity to show the next level how I can play.”

Bevan was second on the team last season in points with 13 goals and 13 assists in the regular season. The sociology major was named the OUA’s Most Valuable Player last season as well as a first-team OUA All-Star and CIS All-Canadian.

“It’s nice to see Andrea overcome adversity from a broken clavicle from just after her first under-18 camp,” commented Head Coach RICK OSBORNE. “All of the hard work she has done over the last three years has paid off for her to earn this roster spot.”

Bevan is the first hockey player to be named to the under-22 team since Carolyn Hall (Victoria, B.C.). Another former member of the under 22 team is former Golden Hawk and Canadian national team member Cheryl Pounder (Mississauga, Ont.).

“I’m honoured to be representing Laurier,” commented Andrea. “There aren’t many members from the CIS representing the team and I’m happy to see one of those spots filled by a Golden Hawk.”

“It speaks to the quality of the program that RICK OSBORNE has built,” stated Peter Baxter, Laurier’s Director of Athletics and Recreation. “Few coaches in their career can say that they have developed an athlete that moves on to the national team.”

Bevan will be practicing with Laurier after the student exam period and then competing in two games at the Guelph Tournament before traveling to Germany.

Canada is the five-time defending champion at the European Air Canada Cup, having won every tournament since its inception in 2003, losing only once in 16 games. Canada, Germany and Russia will compete in Pool B, while Switzerland, Sweden and Finland comprise Pool A.
