WATERLOO - As part of Homecoming Weekend, the Laurier Baseball program held it’s Third Annual Laurier Baseball Alumni Game on Saturday Sept. 22nd. The game featured the current edition of the Golden Hawk Baseball team against a group of Alumni comprised of 16 players from the past. The game was a very entertaining contest that was eventually won by the current team by a score of 11-8 courtesy some late inning heroics.
Current Laurier Head Coach, and former starting pitcher, SCOTT BALLANTYNE, made the start for the Alumni and was opposed by freshmen Ping Zhang. The coach showed the boys that he still has something left in the tank by throwing 2 hitless innings to open the game. The Alumni failed to score on Zhang in his 2 solid innings of work. The Alumni did get on the board in the 3rd and 4th innings off freshman pitcher Wesley Van Luven to go ahead 4-2 through 4 innings. Derek Rapini and Jeff Moisan each surrendered a run in one inning of work for the Alumni team. Current Hawks’ Pitching Coach, Bob Elliott, worked a scoreless 5th for the Alumni and used a variety of speeds to do so. Former Hawk OF Tim Henderson wowed the crowd with a mammoth foul ball to deep right field in the 5th and then followed it up with an even deeper shot to right field, this one stayed fair, for a homerun off Hawk pitcher Marc Spagagnuolo.
Through 8 innings, the Alumni held what seemed to be a comfortable 8-5 lead and called on current Hawk First Base Coach and former P/1B Kevin Albrecht to close the door. Unfortunately for Albrecht, this was not his day. 6 runs and no outs later, Albrecht left the game in favour of Scott Smith who recorded the final three outs, but not before the group of current Laurier players had stormed back to take the lead 11-8. Jack Malone worked a scoreless bottom of the 9th to record the save and even managed to break Henderson’s bat without allowing him to make contact. Malone was carried off the field by his teammates to mark the first time in 3 years that the current year has triumphed over the Alumni.
All in all, it was a great day for Laurier Baseball and a tradition that will continue into the future. Making up the Alumni roster on this day were: SCOTT BALLANTYNE, Derek Rapini, Jeff Moisan, Bob Elliott, John Jurgaitis, Jon Leyland, Ryan O’Connor, Kevin Albrecht, Scott Smith, Tim Henderson, Tim McGinnis, Jordan Bilkas, Pat Kropf, Steve Sadoff and Ryan Davison.
