WATERLOO – Wilfrid Laurier University will single out its student athletes with academic excellence at the First Annual Laurier Academic All-Star/All-Canadian Recognition Luncheon.
This year there are a total of 49 student-athletes to recognize for the 2005-2006 year. The number is a 51% increase over last year’s total of 31 student-athletes and a 60% increase from 2002-2003.
To qualify for either of the awards, students must maintain an average of 80% (10 out of 12 grade point average), attend the university as a full-time student and participate as an eligible athlete in an interuniversity sport for an academic season.
“Laurier takes great pride in its tradition of excellence in academics and athletics,” stated Director of Athletics and Recreation PETER BAXTER
. “It is important to celebrate our top student-athletes who excel both in the lecture halls and within their sport.”
There are a total of 19 student athletes in OUA sports and an additional 30 athletes in CIS level sports from Laurier to be recognized. The group runs across 12 sports and 18 varsity teams and accounts for a total of 10% of the student-athlete population at Wilfrid Laurier University.
The event will take place tomorrow - Tuesday, February 6th at the Paul Martin Centre and will be hosted by Luke Fusco the former Dean of the Faculty of Social Work.
